If England's young players in the team or on the bench tonight need some inspiration before their Group G opener, they could do worse than listen to Sir Geoff Hurst, whose experience in 1966 might sound familiar to their situation now (It would be nice if a couple of them could emulate what he did next, obviously).

"I didn't start the first game (against Uruguay) and I wasn't disappointed with not playing - I was just happy to be sitting on the bench watching England," Hurst said.

"I had only played a few games for England before the World Cup started so my mental attitude was that I wasn't really under any kind of pressure, I was just happy to be there.

"I only came in to face Argentina (in the quarter-finals) because Jimmy Greaves was injured but I was ready. My attitude was right and I was ready to play - it's the same in life as it is in sport - when your chance comes, you have to be ready for it."

  10. 'We have got better players'published at 17:36 British Summer Time 18 June 2018

    Tunisia v England (19:00 BST)

    Frank Lampard
    Former Chelsea & England midfielder

I am confident England will beat Tunisia because we have got better individual players and, as a team, we have looked good in our recent friendlies.

But I don't think we should underestimate them and it will be a difficult game - the opening match of the World Cup is never easy and it is even harder because we are expected to beat them.

In this scenario, if you go into a game thinking that as a player, then it can affect you negatively if things do not go as planned - if, say, after 20 minutes you are not having the kind of dominance that you thought you would.

That's how Rio Ferdinand describes the England camp at a World Cup.

It presents a challenge to the squad - how do they stay focused and motivated for a month without any home comforts or familiarity?

Some England players have already hinted what they'll do - and it mostly revolves around playing Fortnite and watching Love Island.

Among the England players who definitely have a point to prove at a major finals after what happened at Euro 2016 is Three Lions captain Harry Kane.

Kane did not manage to find the net in France but England's 1966 World Cup hat-trick hero Sir Geoff Hurst is confident he will put that right in Russia. He also thinks he is the right choice as skipper.

Hurst said: "I’ve bumped into him a couple of times in the last few months, and he comes across not only what you see on TV but personally as a very, very good and strong character, and a likeable character too.

"I think his leadership will help bond the team together. One of the most important aspects of winning a World Cup is not just the quality of players but the team spirit, the togetherness that you achieve over that month of the World Cup itself. They are key ingredients and Harry is a very good choice."

Another reason why I love the World Cup.

The inadvertenst discoveries of places to put on your travel wishlist.

Until about four days ago I could honestly say it had never crossed my mind to make a trip to Volograd, or Stalingrad as it was called between 1925 and 1961.

And then I started seeing some superb drone footage of the statue, The Motherland Calls, and now I really want to go.

Just look at that! It's 85 metres high, weighs 8,000 tonnes and commemorates the battle of Stalingrad during World War II, where an almost unimaginable 2million people were killed.
