Meet Stephan, Chris, Emil and Patrick, who have come from Gothenburg to watch the game.

They are hoping that the fact many of the Sweden team have played together from junior levels an know each other inside out will help them come through this afternoon.

Asked to describe their team, one said: "We are like an army."

Another, warming to the comparative theme, said: "They are like the Mexican wall."

Which is kind of concerning, because it does not exist yet.

Michael: As an Englishman living in Switzerland (and married to a Swiss) today is a big day! The quarter final might cause some marital strife, but a small price to pay to see both teams win today! And at least our son can be happy either way!

  5. Chances of winning: Switzerlandpublished at 13:48 British Summer Time 3 July 2018

    Sweden v Switzerland (15:00 BST)

Simon Gleave, head of analysis, Gracenote Sports:

"Switzerland were drawn in a tough group which reduced their chance of winning the World Cup to just 1% immediately after the draw. However, a continuation of their run of good results which has seen them lose once since May 2016 put them back on 2% as the World Cup began.

"A draw against Brazil in the opening group match improved Switzerland's chance of winning the World Cup to 4% as they were then even bigger favourites to go through with Brazil. After the win against Serbia, this increased again to 5%, a figure which was confirmed after the final group phase match."

Switzerland have not scored a goal in the knockout stage of a World Cup since their 7-5 loss to Austria in the quarter-finals at the 1954 tournament (which they hosted).

The last Swiss to score a knockout goal at the tournament was Josef Hugi, who netted a hat-trick in that game.

    Wouldn't mind seeing a 7-5 today.

Former Norway and, for a while almost 20 years ago, Wimbledon manager Egil Olsen is in Russia summarising for Norwegian television.

Perhaps best remembered for wearing wellies on the touchline, Olsen said of today's game: "I more hope than expect Sweden to win.

"They are one of the best organised teams in the World Cup and are strong at set plays but struggle to create in midfield.

"Back in Norway the match that would be the biggest draw in the quarter-finals would see Sweden play England."

When asked to predict the score, the 76-year-old added: "Not 4-3!"

And no, he wasn't wearing wellies.

Switzerland have been playing well and got out of Group E without too much fuss.

It is very obvious what Sweden do, and they definitely play to their strengths without having any really talented strikers.

From what I have seen of the Swiss, they just have a little bit more about them, which is why I am backing them to get to the quarter-finals.

    Lawro's prediction: 1-0 to Switzerland

The rain has finally cleared in St Petersburg after a lunchtime deluge that had everyone running for cover - and the volunteers heading to the stadium sporting their wet weather gear.

But while the sun has broken through nobody seems to know who will be smiling at the end.

Just about everybody I have spoken to has described this as a 50/50 game.

And everybody is also equally aware that with the draw the way it is, this is a great opportunity to go deep in the competition.

    Draw

Anyway, Sweden and Switzerland are here in the 'easier' side of the draw and may well be eyeing up a shock route to the final.

This will be the first time the two sides have met in a major tournament.

Win today and they set up a quarter-final against Colombia...or England on Saturday.
