  1. 'England can have a stranglehold on the game'published at 18:29 British Summer Time 3 July 2018

    Colombia v England (19:00 BST)

    Tim Vickery
BBC Sport South American football expert

Radamel Falcao is a player that wants to get in behind and he can hurt England but he doesn't offer a great deal else, in terms of his link up play with back to goal. If England can force Colombia back, isolating Falcao and preventing Juan Cuadrado from getting in behind Ashley Young, then there's a chance England will have a stranglehold on this game.

David Beckham became the first England player to score at three World Cups as his free-kick earned a quarter-final tie against Portugal.

Beckham defied illness to curl home from 30 yards on the hour mark, but England made hard work of Ecuador.

I was in Germany, it was stinking hot, and England lost to Portugal while I was on the plane home. Happy days.

England were given an easy passage into the World Cup quarter-finals after a three-goal blitz against Denmark in the first half.

Danish goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen bundled in under pressure from Rio Ferdinand before Michael Owen and Emile Heskey broke their tournament ducks with well-struck shots.

An 18-year-old me had a bit too much to drink early on and was convinced that it was definitely coming home.

    England lost to Brazil.

Harry Kane has played just 153 minutes at the World Cup but he has already scored five goals, second only to Gary Lineker's record of 10 for England.

If Kane finds the net against Colombia, he will become the first player to score in six consecutive appearances for the Three Lions since Tommy Lawton back in 1939.

Fabian Delph is not in the England squad tonight as he is back in England with his pregnant wife.

"The thought process is that some things in life are more important than football," Gareth Southgate said.

"He's desperate to support us but also I think his focus needs be with his family at this time and he has my full support on that. He's buying his wife curries and all sorts of things to try and aid the speed of process.

"Everybody says you only get one chance to be in a World Cup, but also there's only one day in your life when your children are born.

"I know my father's generation and those before them would view that differently, but you have got to be there for your family and that's very important."
