World Cup 2018: Jesse Lingard scores a spectacular third goal for England

England have only failed to score in one of their 18 knockout games at the World Cup - in the 0-0 draw against Portugal in the 2006 quarter-finals (won by Portugal on penalties).

Their last knock-out victory in the World Cup came against South American opposition, when they beat Ecuador 1-0 in the round of 16 in 2006.

Colombia make two changes from their win over Senegal - with James Rodriguez's absence the big news. He had been a doubt with a calf problem.

Midfield pair Wilmar Barrios and Jefferson Lerma come into the team, with Mateus Uribe dropping to the bench and Rodriguez missing out entirely.

Step forward Messrs Kane, Vardy, Henderson, Alli and Lingard, your country needs you.

Knowing penalties could be required to decide who will progress to the quarter-finals, we asked which players would you most want stepping forward for Gareth Southgate's side. Captain Harry Kane, after netting twice from the spot in the 6-1 group stage win over Panama, predictably leads the way and was included in 99% of your selections

If you were asked to decide, the Tottenham striker would be joined my Jamie Vardy (68%), Jordan Henderson (65%), Dele Alli (65%) and Jesse Lingard (31%).

We will see what effect making so many changes against Belgium has on England, but I actually think they will be fine against Colombia.

They have some good players, but I don't think they will be able to cope with England's high-pressing game.

    Prediction: 0-2

  12. What are Colombia's strengths?published at 17:56 British Summer Time 3 July 2018

    Colombia v England (19:00 BST)

    Carl Worswick
    Colombian football journalist in Moscow

In just over seven games at the Brazil and Russia World Cups, James Rodriguez has struck six goals and provided four assists. Aged 26, he's already his country's joint third all-time top scorer with 21 goals.

Colombia's hopes of advancing to the quarter-finals clearly rest heavily on getting him fit and ready. No player has ever been so influential for the South Americans at a World Cup.

But they are not a one-man team in the same way Argentina's form is tied to the genius of Lionel Messi, or even Portugal with Cristiano Ronaldo. In particular, England should be worried by the team's other attacking options.

Juan Cuadrado ran riot against Poland, because he was playing against a back three that gifted him the space to get behind Maciej Rybus. Using his pace and nimble footwork, the former Chelsea winger wreaked havoc in the penalty area.

    Colombia v England (19:00 BST)

Simon Gleave, head of analytics at sports statistician Gracenote Sports, has looked at the impact of Dele Alli's return to the England team.

"Dele Alli is hugely important to this England team. Analysing the quality of possible England teams using the Euro Player Index , externalreveals that Dele Alli's presence in the team instead of Ruben Loftus-Cheek increases England's chance of beating Colombia by 3%."

Dean Short: I would personally rather have Ruben Loftus-Cheek starting in place of Dele Alli, however I see him as a strong strong impact player.

Andrew Snaith: Nervy but backing the lads. Enjoy the ride folks.

Quinton Marshall: Raheem Sterling to repay Gareth Southgate's loyalty and drive at Colombia today. One of the keys with VAR is to get the ball in the box and then VAR lottery.

Kane slots home to give England lead

Gareth Southgate insists he does not expect repeat of England's embarrassing exit from Euro 2016, when they lost to Iceland in the last 16.

The England manager and his back-up team have been working to prepare the players mentally.

He said: "I think we are always trying to psychologically prepare the team to get them in the right moment for every game, whether that might mean they need a push or they need calming down.

"That is the art of coaching and that is what our team of staff are there to do.

"What we sense in the group is an excitement, an understanding that it is pointless looking any further than this game and maybe it is a trap we have fallen into in the past."
