Shades of the late, great, Jonah Lomu when Kylian Mbappe gets the ball to feet on the wing. There are two Uruguayans in front of him but he just knocks it past and goes, they can't stop him without holding and fouling him.

Cristhian Stuani doesn't mess about, charging back and clattering Lucas Hernandez late and high. That was a sore one, no booking though. France free-kick, dealt with.

Not the cagey, stale opening I expected/feared. France as bright as their away shirt on the counter attack as Antoine Griezmann invites left-back Lucas Hernandez forwards. He hits a low cross/shot into the area, Olivier Giroud takes a touch but unlike Sergio Aguero in Argentina's opener, he can't spin and finish. Chance gone.

Little cameo from Kylian Mbappe though as he slides away from two men.

Nervy defending from France after a sloppy pass gave possession away. Samuel Umtiti air kicks at the ball but Nahitan Nandez wasn't quite ready for it.

Uruguay having a good spell. Luis Suarez finds stand-in Cristhian Stuani, into the area but very wide right, he flashes a shot across goal and there's nobody there to accept. Would have been a tap-in!

That is a key battle between Kylian Mbappe and Diego Laxalt. We can see Mbappe fancies it and the Frenchman's burst of speed will be hard to mark.

Chaos! Chaos in the France area as they make a real hash of dealing with Diego Laxalt's cross, it runs across the box and Nahitan Nandez has a shot blocked.

Olivier Giroud is down and needs treatment. The replay shows that off the ball Jose Gimenez gave him a kick in the calves. Bang. Let him know you're there.

Gimenez and Diego Godin are double hard.

    Uruguay 0-0 France

Uruguay drop off and let France have it from the off, Luis Suarez has a lot of space between himself and the nearest man in blue.

Uruguay won't be bothered about having possession today.

In the absence of Italy and Buffon, La Marseillaise has got to be the World Cup anthem of choice hasn't it?

It was written and composed by army officer Claude Joseph Rouget de in April 1792 during the French Revolution. Originally titled Battle Hymn for the Army of the Rhine, it became known as La Marseillaise because it was first sung on the streets by French National Guard volunteers from Marseille upon their arrival in Paris. It became the national anthem in July 1795 but lost its status under various rulers before being reinstated in 1879.

Before we go overboard with Suarez worship, please remind everyone on his cynical cheating against Ghana in the 2010 WC QF, where he handballed on the line in extra time denying Ghana of SF place

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

Luis Suarez is so difficult to mark because he is so unpredictable. Some players you can read where they are going to take their touch from their movement and body language. He was never as predictable because his touch wasn’t always clean but he would manage to face you up and almost play the ball through you.

If I nibbled at the ball, he was fantastic at nicking it away and leaving me for dead, but when I started to wait for him to make his move, he wasn’t as good.

I think there is a bit of frustration back in France for the style of football but as long as we are winning then it is OK. The issue is when we stop winning, then the problems will arise over Didier Deschamps' conservatism.

Reilly: Since Uruguay hosted (and won) the first World Cup, if they win it this year, do they get to sing "It's Coming Home"?

Moon: Cavani always has the worst luck when it comes to international tournaments... but fair enough, this World Cup he's finally shown the entire world what he can do.

James: Cristhian Stuani. From Boro reserve to world cup 1/4 final in 18 months.
