    Uruguay 0-2 France

Uruguay manager Oscar Tabarez: "I don't know any examples when the coach decides who will be the coach in the future.

"It is not up to me to decide. I still have a contract."

  2. 'This is our reality'published at 17:22 British Summer Time 6 July 2018

    Uruguay 0-2 France

Uruguay manager Oscar Tabarez: "Our dream comes to an end but the fact that the World Cup is over doesn't mean that we can't do well in the Copa America. We have new dreams which we will try to make come true.

"We are sad, we feel it, but we have to move on. Many countries in the football elite left this tournament much earlier than we did. Let's not be too dramatic, this is our reality."

Uruguay manager Oscar Tabarez: "We made a huge physical effort in the first 20 minutes but we were not able to exploit the problems that France had.

"Then they scored and that's a detail which has a huge impact on a quarter-final. We spoke about it during the break, we couldn't solve it.

"The boys gave everything but France controlled the match very well. They played better than we did, I admit that."

    Brazil v Belgium (19:00 GMT)

You lucky, lucky people have the day's second World Cup quarter-final to come, with build-up starting in just 15 minutes time.

That match is live on BBC One and online, so you will be able to watch with us too.

Should Belgium just go for it from the off and start Maroune Fellaini - bomb it to the back post?

  5. 'France mentally prepared to go all the way'published at 17:08 British Summer Time 6 July 2018

    Uruguay 0-2 France

    Julien Laurens
French football expert on BBC Radio 5 live

The objective for France was always to reach the semi final ahead of the tournament, but they also know once they get there, anything is possible. It also shows you how far this team has come because they lost in the quarter-final two years ago on set pieces.

Raphael Varane was beaten too easily by Matts Hummels on that day, but this afternoon, he was the one who scored from the set piece. I think they are mentally prepared and they will believe they can go all the way now.

Both possible opponents in the next round will be interesting. We have links to Belgium because they are our neighbours, and Brazil because we have had so many big games against them. I think Belgium will be an easier opponent but I think Brazil will win tonight.

Akhil: Muslera was wrong footed, he's getting more grief than he deserves. Extremely difficult to stop that shot while going the wrong way.

Reilly: So the World Cup's not going home then?

Amrul: No one played great for France and it was a strange game with no one really standing out. Lloris was probably the man of the match with that super save before half-time.

    • France’s Antoine Griezmann has scored seven goals in his last six appearances in the knockout stages of major tournaments (World Cup and EUROs). He has three at this World Cup (three behind Harry Kane)

It was more clinical and more professional from France today, which is important because you have to win in different ways if you want to win a World Cup. In some games you can be more expansive, depending on the opposition, and in others you have to be solid. The set-pieces were spot on and it's always good when the things you work on in training pay off in the game.

  12. 'France are the team to beat'published at 16:58 British Summer Time 6 July 2018

    Chris Sutton
Ex-Chelsea striker on BBC Radio 5 live

France have laid down a marker. They have said 'we are the favourites to win this tournament'. They deserved to win today, and yes it was a howler, but it looks ominous for the French.

Uruguay missed their star striker but the second goal was horrendous goalkeeping, and it was game over after that. I thought France were extremely composed in the way they kept the ball. They are the team to beat.

  13. 'A tale of two keepers'published at 16:58 British Summer Time 6 July 2018

The game was decided by that Muslera mistake. A rash foul gave France the chance to take the lead and then it is a tale of two keepers. Muslera always looks like he's got an error in him. He went too far across, he wasn't in a right position.

France are the better side, Uruguay could win if they worked hard and made no mistakes. They made two big mistakes.Suarez and Cavani are one force, it was a great shame that Cavani was not there.

Floods of tears from the Uruguay contingent. Lucas Torreira among those to succumb at the whistle, while Edinson Cavani trudges on forlornly to console his great mate Luis Suarez.
