    Uruguay v France (15:00 BST)

The big news from the Uruguay team is the absence of star striker Edinson Cavani. Girona's ex-Middlesbrough forward Cristhian Stuani gets the nod to start alongside Luis Suarez. Stuani has had the season of his life in La Liga, scoring 21 goals last season.

Cavani is injured so not even an option on the bench.

France's one change is as expected - Corentin Tolisso replaces the suspended Blaise Matuidi in midfield.

For his age, Mbappe is well ahead of schedule. He will be talked about for the next 10 years. He has got more than just pace and he has got a stepover and a trick as well.

But today, Uruguay will try and double up on him so it might be frustrating for him.

That performance against Argentina was the best individual performance we have seen so far at the World Cup.

Has he got improvements to make? Yes. But he is unstoppable and he is only going to get better and better.

    Who can replace Edinson Cavani?

Cristhian Stuani enjoyed a fine first season back in La Liga with newly-promoted side Girona, following two underwhelming campaigns at Middlesbrough. He was played as a main striker and responded with goals, 21 of them in total. It was only the second time in his career that he had breached the 20-goal mark, having also done so with Albacete in Spain’s Segunda Division in 2009-10. Stuani also scored 10 headed goals which was the most of any player in Europe’s elite five leagues.

  6. 20 years of hurt?published at 14:42 British Summer Time 6 July 2018

    Uruguay v France (15:00 BST)

Russia 2018 will mark 20 years since the French became world champions for the first and only time. Keen followers of history will suggest they are due a slump after a respectable quarter-final showing in Brazil.

When they won the tournament in ’98 and finished runners-up in ’06 they then finished winless and bottom of the group at both subsequent World Cups.

I felt far more confident against Argentina because I knew we would have space that Mbappe could exploit.

Uruguay will play deep and restrict the space.

All we need is the sun, and the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium would look like a giant Uruguay flag. The blue and white seats are definitely supporting the South Americans, but there surely won't be many of them still visible when this game starts.

Paul Pogba is a "true leader" whose ability will be recognised at this World Cup, according to France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Manchester United's Pogba has been one of Les Bleus' brightest performers in Russia having been deployed with more defensive-minded midfielders N'Golo Kante and Blaise Matuidi.

"I think he's maturing, he's growing," said Lloris. "He's accumulating experience, be it with Manchester United, Juventus - now he's lining up more seasons, more caps.

"He's starting to grow in the locker room also and that is a good thing because he's a true leader.

"He's a very ambitious player. We all know he's extremely talented and he has a lot to offer the team and his team-mates. I think that these big competitions are also good to reveal the talent of players and I'm sure it's going to be the case for Paul."

  13. 'The half-Uruguyan Frenchman'published at 14:30 British Summer Time 6 July 2018

    Uruguay v France (15:00 BST)

Today will be an interesting clash between France forward Antoine Griezmann and Uruguay defenders Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez, his Atletico Madrid team-mates. They are such good friends that Godin is the godfather of Griezmann's daughter.

Griezmann met Godin and Gimenez at Madrid airport wearing a Uruguay jersey when they flew back after clinching World Cup qualification - and has said he feels "part Uruguayan".

"It's a nationality that I love, a country that I love and it's going to be very emotional for me."

Uruguay midfielder Nahitan Nandez, who used to play for Penarol - a team Griezmann is a member of - said: "Griezmann is very Uruguayan, he passes himself off as a Uruguayan. For him, it's going to be a special game, like for us.

"All I can say is that we hope he behaves well on the pitch and remembers he is half Uruguayan!"

    • France are aiming to reach the World Cup semi-finals for the first time since 2006.
    • They are unbeaten in their last nine World Cup matches against South American sides (W5, D4), keeping a clean sheet in seven of those games.
    • Kylian Mbappe has scored three goals so far this tournament - he is the first teenager to score this many in a World Cup campaign since Pele netted six for Brazil in 1958.
    • Only Pele and Germany's Edmund Conen (four goals in 1934) have scored more as a teenager.

Winners of the inaugural World Cup on home soil in 1930, Uruguay also lifted the trophy in 1950. There is no denying their World Cup pedigree over the years as they have additionally finished fourth on three occasions: 1954, 1970 and 2010.

Sitting on the fence there Ben!

France will certainly find this Uruguay side a tough nut to crack. They are a horrible team to go behind to, and I mean that as a compliment. They have had many comparisons to Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid side over the past few weeks.

Si: As a neutral, of course I'll miss Cavani's finishing. But when one door closes another opens

Matt: I know France have amazing talent but don’t write Uruguay off. They are a tough nut to crack, and for as well as France played last week, they were up against a fragile defence!

Ben: I'm going for a last four of Uruguay, Brazil, Croatia, and England/Sweden.

  18. Awkward Francepublished at 14:22 British Summer Time 6 July 2018

    Uruguay v France (15:00 BST)

    Chris Sutton
Ex-Chelsea striker on BBC Radio 5 live

We won't see a Uruguayan team play with a high line today. In the group stages, France were quite awkward and they didn't break those teams down easily and that is because their opposition sat in and played deep. Argentina went toe-to-toe with France but I don't think Uruguay will. They will set up to stay in the game and I think they are the best at it.

    • Uruguay could equal a national record by winning five consecutive games at a single World Cup. The last time they won their opening four games was in 1930, which was enough to win the tournament.
    • They are aiming to make the semi-finals for a fifth time and for the second time in the last three tournaments.
    • La Celeste have won their last two quarter-finals in 1970 and 2010. Their last defeat at this stage came in 1966 when they lost 4-0 to West Germany.

Dimitri Payet could have been facing Uruguay, instead the Marseille midfielder is facing dental surgery.

Payet reinjured a thigh as Marseille lost the Europa League final to Atletico Madrid on May 16, and, when France coach Didier Deschamps announced his World Cup squad the next day, he decided not to take a risk on the mercurial midfielder.

Now Payet will be out for an unspecified period for an operation on his wisdom teeth after missing the start of Marseille's pre-season training on Thursday.
