Four absolute pearlers of goals, a huge attendance for a fourth-tier play-off final and blistering heat. It's been quite an afternoon, and it ends with Coventry City are on their way back to League One.

Commiserations for Exeter - who fought valiantly in the first half - but for the second year in a row they've come up just short at Wembley.

For Coventry, however, it's party time and a much-needed boost for a club that's endured a tough few years or so.

And so that ends the 2017-18 English Football League season. The World Cup starts in a few weeks, thank heavens for that. Don't think I can be away from football for too much longer.

We knew if Marc McNulty got the ball down and ran at Coventry, he could cause problems for them - and he did. He's a worthy man of the match. He's been instrumental in the goals today.

The city centre will be buzzing tonight and these players deserve it. They came out and took the game to Exeter, destroying them.

You could sense in the atmosphere at half-time: if Coventry came out and scored early on, it would pull the seats forward. And that's what happened. It will be a party atmosphere for the next few weeks now.

1-0 down, on an occasion like this, is always going to be tough. 2-0 makes it even worse.

Going into this game, I felt Exeter came in on better form than they did last year, after a semi-final that took less out of them. I'm slightly disappointed now at how some players have performed and how they've set up.

Exeter were simply blown away by Coventry’s fast start to the second half.

When your centre-half curls one in from 20 yards and your right-back scores with his left peg, you know it’s your day.

The celebrations will go on long into the night.

After all, a first promotion in 51 years is certainly one for Coventry fans to savour into the summer.

Coventry City defender Jack Grimmer told Sky Sports:

"You can't ask the fans to come out in numbers more than that. To give us this experience and push us on, it's something I'll remember forever.

"I went in and saw Sparky [Marc McNulty] laid it off to me and I thought if I take a touch and shape it towards the back stick.

"Luckily I found the top corner!"

Coventry City defender Jordan Willis told Sky Sports:

"It means everything, especially with the season we had last year. To come back first time, I'm buzzing.

"I've not scored many and they all came last season but this one is definitely up there,.

"We won the Checkatrade Trophy last year which was positive and now this is massive. Hopefully we can give the fans something to cheer for."

Coventry City boss Mark Robins told Sky Sports:

"This was really important for the club from where it's been.

"We've played at a level no one expected us to and the pressure that comes with that is immense. The players have been magnificent.

"You could see in the second half people's legs going [due to the heat] and we were lucky we didn't lose anyone to injury.

"This is for the supporters, they've been magnificent for the club and it's for them."

You cannot come to a game of this magnitude and not show up. I think even one individual being off-key can affect you in a game like this - and I think there were too many players not at their maximum today.

There are some quality players on this pitch and that was the fourth of four amazing goals we've seen today.

This has been a great advert for League Two football. It's too little, too late for Exeter, though.

Jonson Clarke-Harris skips and mazes his way through the Exeter City half and decides to fire from long range but it sails well out of play.

Why not eh? Might as well when your team's 3-0 up.

The Sky Blues pair seem to love the big occasion.

Matt Jay has almost bagged a consolation for Exeter - and in style! But Lee Burge dives to deny his long-range effort.

Meanwhile, Marc McNulty comes off for Coventry and is replaced by Jordan Ponticelli.

Just the 28 goals for the Sky Blues this season, but McNulty's not added to that tally today. Still, a fine performance from the Coventry striker this afternoon.

It's about pride now, for me - Exeter have to come out now and fight to make sure it's not four or five. They need to use all of their experience.

At the moment, whatever Exeter have tried has not worked. 3-0 down means it's a roll of the dice to see what works.

Kyle Edwards is a direct player and he might produce something.

Cheers of OLE ring around Wembley from the Coventry fans every time they complete a pass.

Tom Bayliss has had enough of this showboating, though. He wants a fourth Sky Blues goal and he almost gets himself on the scoresheet with a lovely solo effort in the box before curling towards the corner, forcing Christy Pym into a fine save.
