Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton manager Chris Hughton speaking to BBC Sport:

On the result: "I thought we were second best, Watford were better in most departments. There were periods we could create something and hold the ball, but overall we did not show enough to get something from the game.

"It troubles me when any opposition keeper has an easy a day as Ben Foster had. We didn’t deserve anything from today. Sometimes you wonder what happened, pre-season was fine. We have some new signings but the team that played today was the same as last season, so no excuses. We've got work to do, a disappointing result but more so a disappointing performance."

On Watford's first goal: "Each team can work a way to get a spare man from a set piece like they did and they executed it to their favour. It came at a time where we were still in the game but that made it too hard for us."

Fulham

Speaking to BBC Sport, Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic said: "It was a shame because we wanted to start the season with a good result. We showed some positives and negatives. We showed we can be brave and can move the ball, but we must stick together and keep going. I used two players who have only been with us a few days and I need more time. Now we are going to have all week in front of us to work hard and not look behind."

Reading between the lines I suspect that a World Cup summer and the transfer window closure shifting forward has hampered a few teams in terms of their ability to ingratiate players.

The counter-argument to that, of course, is to do your business early. But this is not always possible.

Fulham will be better than they were today for sure.

Fulham

Asked about the step up from the Championship, Slavisa Jokanovic added:"The Premier League is more power, more speed and more quality and we must adapt. We followed the game plan and created some half chances but we didn't show enough quality in the opposition box and their goalkeeper made some saves. Maybe it was a penalty or not, but we cannot complain about that, and they showed their quality in the second-half. We have to trust ourselves and work hard and we know we can play better than today."

Cardiff City

Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock told BBC Sport: "I thought we did alright, we got better as the game went on. On another day we could have got a result but it wasn't to be.

"They were better in certain areas but not other. We had our chances and I'm disappointed. The penalty was soft.

"It just felt a little bit hard for us today at times.

"They are an established team in the Premier League and we could have got a result here on another day. We're looking forward to the season and a few lads were a bit nervous but once that rubbed off, it was okay.

"We didn't have Ken Zohore today and we've got Harry Arter to come back as well. We've got a lot to look forward to."

Bournemouth

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe told BBC Sport: “We had control of the first half and moved the ball well and didn't get penned in. The penalty gave us a platform to build from.

“The second half was a bit more nip and tuck but we stood up really well. We kept a clean sheet which we didn't do much last season which was good.

“If we can keep Ryan [Fraser] fit he'll be a big player for us this season. We needed this win after a poor start last year and it's our first opening day win in the Premier League.

“When Callum went down I thought it was a penalty but I haven't seen it again. The players were tested but they were really strong.”

Chelsea

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta speaking to BBC Sport:

"It's true when we created chances we were clinical. The goal just before half-time was massive going into the second-half.

"It meant we could control the game and we could have scored more goals in the end. In the first-half every ball and every cross was dangerous for them."

On working under Maurizio Sarri:

"We have been working really hard with him. He knows what he wants and our target was to start really well which we have done and now we must get ready for Arsenal.

"Our signings have been very good, adapting very quickly to the team and being comfortable in the the team and we have a very good squad."

Chelsea

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri speaking to BBC Motd:

"The game was more difficult than the result. If you see the result you think it was a very easy match but in the first half it was very difficult against physical opponents.

"We are not a physical team so for 20 minutes we were in trouble but we did very well.

"In this moment we are not at the top of our potential but we had the capacity to suffer for 20 minutes in the first half."

On how long to reach their potential as a team:

"It depends on me and the players. I don’t know. The situation until now has been very difficult. On Monday four players from the World Cup arrived. And then on Tuesday another two, so it’s not been easy for me at the moment. Hopefully two months and not three.

Huddersfield Town

More from Huddersfield boss David Wagner: "We tried to create opportunities in the second-half and we hit the bar and then we conceded another goal on the counter where Eden Hazard shows his top quality.

"I’ve seen enough to be confident for the Premier League season, because we will not always meet the top, top teams. If you want a result from these games the small margins have to go in your favour."

Huddersfield Town

Huddersfield Town head coach David Wagner speaking to BBC Sport:

"I think Chelsea were very clinical. They had four or five chances and scored three. We started very well in the first half. We pressed them high and the players did very well.

"We had a very good opportunity at 1-0 where Steve Mounie hits the post and instead of being a goal up we were a goal down. And then just before half-time we made a tactical mistake to concede a penalty."

Watford

Javi Gracia on Roberto Pereyra's goal: "We tried to do it many times, it did not always finish the same way. We prepare different set pieces. We scored one goal similar with Kiko Fermina here last season and today I know Roberto has a high quality and he can do it.

On starting the season strong:"We have to do it, need to start well, with the support of our fans it is easier. I’m sure all the players make an effort to get good results."

Watford

Watford manager Javi Gracia speaking to BBC Sport:

On the perfomance: I’m very happy with the result, but happier with the way we got it. I think we played very good game, dominated all the game. They didn’t have any shots on target or create any chances. The team showed a good reaction after losing the ball and I am very happy for them.

I think today we have played the same way like our last game against Sampdoria in pre-season. Very aggressive, good attitude and ambition. Very proud of my players."

The Bournemouth boys are all on message with Eddie Howe's assessment of this being Bournemouth's best Premier League squad. Might need a sterner test than Cardiff, though, before we can truly make a call.

Brooks is a talent for sure. And Jefferson Lerma and Diego Rico certainly nailed waving at the fans before and sitting in the stands during the game.

Bournemouth

Bournemouth forward Callum Wilson said: "I'm disappointed to miss a penalty. It's never nice when it's saved but you can make it go one way or another and thankfully I've put it right.

"There has been a good vibe in the squad in pre-season and we've brought that into today. It was difficult and we knew it would be but we got there in the end.

"It's the strongest squad since I've been here. The new signings have good quality which we showed today. Brooksy played well and it's good to get three points."

Bournemouth

Speaking to BBC Sport, Bournemouth goalscorer Ryan Fraser said: "It was the right place at the right time. In pre-season I was trying to get in good positions instead of outside the box and Callum's found me.

"It's my third season in the Premier League and I need to step up. Hopefully I can keep going now."

Crystal Palace

Palace boss Hodgson, asked if he was surprised by Fulham’s team selection, added:“There weren’t that many of the new signings playing and their line up didn’t surprise us too much.

"Vicente Guaita has been excellent for us in the pre-season and quite frankly it was a toss of the coin between him and Wayne Hennessey. I would have been equally confident had Vicente played but Wayne Henessesy played well last season and there was no reason for him to surrender his shirt. We showed the quality we were capable of in the second half."

Crystal Palace

Speaking to BBC Sport, Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson said: "I thought we were much better in the second half. I thought Fulham played well in the first period and they caused us problems, but our goalkeeper made some good saves. We had better control in the second half and it was difficult for them to come back into it after Wilfried Zaha scored."

That was a really good win for Palace today. Always tough to go to a promoted side first day of the season, and Fulham showed in the Championship last season (particularly in the second half of the season) that they are no mugs.

Crystal Palace

Speaking to BBC Sport, Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha said: "It was a difficult game but we stuck by our game plan. We knew we couldn't get impatient, and just had to stay in our shape and take our chances in possession. We are just taking every game as it comes, the main thing is taking our chances because we have pace in our team and we can counter on sides."

Asked about speculation surrounding him this summer, Zaha added: "I have just had my head down and it was not something I was involved in. I am with Palace and I don’t have time to think about the speculation."
