What a ball from Jonjo Shelvey, he was only around 15 yards into the Cardiff half. Fair play to Neil Etheridge, he reads the flight of the ball. What a save from Etheridge.

A stunning Jonjo Shelvey ball from the right finds Ayoze Perez at the far post, whose first-time attempted volley is blocked one-handed by Neil Etheridge.

Newcastle's best play of the match so far.

What is it in Newcastle's DNA where we can look so composed against the top six teams but so clumsy against others? Feel we will not finish with 11 men at this rate.

Matt Coupland May: This is the lowest quality Premier League football I've seen in a long time. Cardiff are no better than a mid table Championship side and will be relegated for sure. Newcastle are absolutely abysmal to watch too, and calling themselves a "big club" is a joke!

Stephen MCP Brogarth: This is the clearest evidence yet that the Premier League is getting weaker. This is mid table Championship football.

    A quarter of a chance.

Kenneth Zohore heads wide from a cross from the left - it was a difficult opportunity to be fair, with Magpies defenders crowding him.

By the way Kenedy has not completed one single pass yet.

That's something to tell his grandkids.

Jack Lovatt: There's Kenedy out for three games retrospectively!

Kyle: Idiotic from Kenedy and very petulant from him. He's lucky not to be sent off. Had VAR been in use this season he would have seen red. Poor play from the Brazilian.

Jay Barnes: Kenedy is really lucky to be on the pitch, but will deservedly sit out the next three matches.

The Brazilian kicks out after a challenge and is very, very lucky to stay on the pitch. VAR and he would have been off for lashing out at Victor Camarasa. Lucky let off for Newcastle.

By the letter of the law, Kenedy should be off the pitch. He is very lucky boy.

  11. Should that have been a red for Kenedy?published at 34 mins

    Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle

The corner is cleared before Kenedy - somewhat inexplicably - lashes out at Victor Camarasa by kicking him.

It happened right next to ref Craig Pawson, who seemed to be looking at something else at the time of the incident.

Young Kenedy is a very, very lucky man.

Rob Millward: Could be a record in this game for long balls... two teams just hoofing the ball to each other! Neither team confident enough to get it down and play.

  13. YELLOW CARDpublished at 30 mins

    Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle

Good skipping through by Matt Ritchie but he can't find Kenedy, who was prowling near the edge of the area.

Newcastle then pick up a second yellow as a result of Javier Manquillo pulling back Josh Murphy.

    Another Cardiff free-kick...

However, the aforementioned Murphy fires the set-piece towards Cardiff Bay.

    Newcastle now have a corner...

  14. 'Cardiff look a completely different team'published at 12:58 British Summer Time 18 August 2018

    Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle

    Stephen Warnock
Ex-Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Newcastle are being given no room at all. Cardiff are swarming round them and giving them no time at all, but the question is, can they keep it up for the entire 90 minutes?

Cardiff look a completely different team with Kenneth Zohore up front. It has been a great start from Cardiff.

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez shows his disgust at the awarding of a throw-in to Cardiff when he thought it should have been Newcastle's - we're at that stage now.

Kyle: Good open start to the match. When Newcastle attack we look a threat and players like Ayoze Perez, Kenedy and Matt Ritchie can cause them problems. Newcastle are conceding too many set pieces though, and that's Cardiff's biggest threat.

Without question, the Cardiff City fans are doing all they can to match the decibel level reached at Molineux last weekend.

The atmosphere, at the moment, is topping the quality levels, though this contest is open and entertaining, perhaps more so than either manager would have liked.

  20. Fact attackpublished at 12:52 British Summer Time 18 August 2018

    Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle

Newcastle have had as many shots on target (two) in the opening 11 minutes against Cardiff as they did in the whole match against Tottenham.
