Great cheers from the home support - no doubt in goodwill - for ex-Swansea player Jonjo Shelvey, whose 'Hollywood' pass goes out for a throw-in.

  2. 'A great start to the game'published at 12:50 British Summer Time 18 August 2018

    Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle

    Stephen Warnock
Ex-Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

It has been a great start to the game with chances at either end. The question is can Cardiff come back at Newcastle. Newcastle have the quality up front, Cardiff just need to sit in.

    Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle

Great ball from Mo Diame tries to pick the overlapping Javier Manquillo, but Josh Murphy does well to intercept.

Now Cardiff are back on the attack.

Kenneth Zohore - who scored nine goals in the Champ last season - tries to square the ball to Junior Hoilett in the box, but Ciaran Clark puts the block in allowing Martin Dubravka to collect.

    The entertainment continues.

You can see the two contrasting styles. Newcastle want to play out from the back and need to look for the gaps, but Cardiff are well structured and organised.

Newcastle clear, but it's been more than just a lively start to the game - will this tempo continue for 90+ minutes?

It's a feral atmosphere inside Cardiff City Stadium, and that chance for Sol Bamba has raised the volume another notch.

Newcastle look the more accomplished team technically but Neil Warnock will be happy with his side's full-blooded start to this game.

The Bluebirds win a corner - and almost score from it!

Sol Bamba gets up like he normally gets up and sends the ball towards goal - however a combination of his own player Harry Arter and Ayoze Perez ensures that the ball never tests Martin Dubravka.

Straight at the other end, again, Perez fires a low angled shot that Neil Etheridge does well to block.

Alan Hansen would hate these defences.

The home side now have another dangerous free-kick...

Lovely ball from Jonjo Shelvey. That is the danger at this level, Kenedy has such fast feet.

    Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle

Martin Dubravka takes a huge risk at the back as he dawdles on a back pass allowing Kenneth Zohore to get a foot on his attempted clearance.

Newcastle's permanent summer signing gets away with it - just.

Moments later, the Magpies have their first effort on goal as the wily Kenedy gets away from his marker and drills a low shot that Neil Etheridge scoops up at the second time of asking.

    Action Jackson.

Cardiff City fans have wasted no time in reminding the Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey that he

    A) Played for hated rivals Swansea CIty

    B) Looks a bit like 'he we do not mention' from the Harry Potter series.

Matt "I've always got one of those tackles in me" Ritchie scythes down Junior Hoilett and picks up a very early yellow.

An early free-kick for the men in blue - far right of the Newcastle penalty area.

Joe Ralls floats it in but the ball is easily cleared - easy for the Magpies' defence.

  15. 'Managers couldn't trust Shelvey'published at 12:31 British Summer Time 18 August 2018

    Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle

    Paul Ince
Former MK Dons manager on Football Focus

Jonjo Shelvey is a good player but the big issue with him, and I saw him grow up from when he was 16 at Liverpool alongside my son Tom, it’s the trust.

If you can’t trust to him to stay on the pitch for 90 minutes and he’s missing three, four, five games a season, you’ll struggle. It looks like now he’s got his head screwed on now.

These are conditions that suit the pitch, there is a bit of zip in the surface. I am not sure if we will see Cardiff play the ball much on the ground, I expect to see more of that from Newcastle.
