Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson: "With any luck we wouldn't have been 1-0 down.

"They were quite lucky to get out of here with three points last year as well. We probably did enough to get a result tonight but that was taken from us. I don't think it was a penalty [awarded for a foul on Mo Salah]. I'm angered that a good result was taken from us."

It was another cracking night for James Milner.

He extended his current record for the most Premier League games scored in without losing any of them (48 Games: W38 D10 L0).

The midfielder has scored 13 of the 15 penalties that he has taken in the Premier League, including 9 of his 10 for Liverpool in the competition. He is the first player to score eight consecutive Premier League goals from penalties.

More from Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson, speaking to Sky Sports: "Wan-Bissaka catches him [for the red card]. I don't think he tried to pull him down but there was contact and he pulled him down. It was the right decision. He was the last man and did his best to rescue the situation. In another game he might have got a toe on the ball. I don't blame him at all.

"We were playing a top team. We are not favourites home or away. We had to contain them in the first half and there weren't many goal chances. It is typical TV stuff, trying to make me a villain because I have to give an opinion and then you can go get 30 other opinions. It angers me when decision cost us points, but I am no different to any other manager at any level."

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson, speaking to Sky Sports: "I thought we pushed them very hard. We should have come in at 0-0 at half time and the the second half would have been even tougher. We gave them enough problems and we can consider ourselves unlucky to lose 2-0.

On the penalty decision against his side: "What would people expect me to say to that decision? There is no point discussing it. Sakho is a defender and he has to try and defend, which I think he did well. At the end of the game Van Dijk clears out Max Meyer and we didn't get a penalty. We were unlucky with referee decisions. I'm more interested in the fact we played really well."

It would be fair to say (and somewhat understandable) that Roy Hodgson was a tad frustrated with the decisions that went against his side and also the line of questioning from the media following the game.

Crystal Palace keeper Wayne Hennessey to Sky Sports: "I haven't seen the penalty decision but a few of the lads are saying it shouldn't have been a penalty. That destroyed us before half-time. We were unlucky. We couldn't find the goal and they've punished us."

On the red card: "I thought he got a tiny little nick on it. We played some nice stuff, it's a shame we couldn't score a goal. We had chances and are creating well at the moment."

  8. Klopp not interested in title race talkpublished at 22:19 British Summer Time 20 August 2018

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, speaking to Sky Sports: "They play a system they play all the time with high-quality players. They are a really good football team with a simple, but clear plan. They tried to cause us problems with the long balls. I don’t know a lot of centre-backs in the world who can deal with Christian Benteke like Virgil van Dijk did tonight.

"It was difficult for us to be completely safe in this situation but we were there and we helped each other avoid big problems. It was not a brilliant performance - our full-backs can play 70 or 80% better - but I'm very happy with the result."

On the early stages of a title race:"It's very early. I couldn't care less really. We are not in a race with other Premier League teams each weekend. I was not 100% sure tonight in the first half that we would score. You have to play it as it is and be a real challenger, play ugly, do all that type of stuff. Our target is to be a difficult opponent. It is too strong to say anything after two match days. You can discuss whatever you want - just do it without us."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: "We can play better football. It was a really intense first half so it wasn't easy to make the right decisions. They had their moments. I know we have to play much better but tonight I'm absolutely fine with that."

Asked about looking stressed during the tense finale: "In these moments the fuel is really low and maybe the players need a bit of help from an angry manager - 'run or I will kill you' - and they did that with a fantastic counter attack."

Has his side sent a message to the rest of the league? "I am not interested in sending a statement to Manchester City or anyone else. I want to win football games and that's what we did tonight."

  11. 'Liverpool have got to try to win everything'published at 22:08 British Summer Time 20 August 2018

    Crystal Palace 0-2 Liverpool

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk to Sky Sports: “It’s a very tough game. We knew before the game it would be. I don’t think the big teams ever win here comfortably. I’m happy with a clean sheet. I think a well-deserved three points.

“We know how direct Crystal Palace are looking for Benteke and then the other striker. It’s always going to be tough but we were ready for the fight.

"We have an amazing team and manager. We practice every day on how to get better. We showed a lot of good things today – we need to be proud of ourselves today.

"We've got to try to win everything. It's been a while but we don't need to think too much ahead. We've only played two games, it'll be a very long road and a tough year."

Bottom line is that Palace lost that game but they can take something away from the way they played in the second half.

Liverpool are a quality side and Palace troubled them. They'll beat plenty of sides this season.

That is a big three points for Liverpool. Palace will feel aggrieved and they gave it a real go, but is this a different Liverpool we're going to see this year. Is this going to be their year?

If you want to win titles these are the kind of performances you need to produce.

Smashing teams 4-0 on your own turf is one thing, but grinding out victories at tough places against hard opponents is equally as important.

This is a big feather in Liverpool's cap.

Sadio Mane haunts Palace again. He is away after the cleared ball and too fast and clinical when it counts. He gathers from Mo Salah's pass sees off the attention of Patrick van Aanholt and then rounds Wayne Hennessey before finishing low into the empty net.

What a silly foul from Adam Lallana on Joel Ward. He was going nowhere with his back to play. Lallana lets him turn and wrestles him to the floor. This is the opportunity for Palace.
