Liverpool never really took to Roy Hodgson. There are lots of subplots tonight - Mamadou Sakho against his old club as well - and I think Hodgson will feel he has a point to prove.

The Liverpool defensive line is high. Like, in the Palace half high. The game is being played pretty much exclusively in the home side's half.

Liverpool bossing possession. Unsurprisingly.

Trent Alexander-Arnold looks to swing in a cross from the right. The young full-back is more than capable of something destructive, but the only thing he is destroying with that is potentially the teeth of someone sat in row Z.

Really good defending from Mamadou Sakho. As Mo Salah was released he tried to cut in on his left foot but Sakho stood up well and blocked the shot.

Oh, nearly a suicidal back-pass from James McArthur. Mohamed Salah is on the hunt but Mamadou Sakho is strong and wins his tackle.

Moments later, Salah is on the charge again, but after darting into the box he can't get his shot away.

Probably not a good idea to let Salah have space.

I'd love to see Palace get into the top 10 comfortably. Seven losses, no goals last season. For me Roy Hodgson should have got some recognition last season. Their confidence must be so high, this season it's like they have 10 points on the board already compared to last year.

Liverpool zip it around early doors before losing possession to Wilfried Zaha. Immediately the volume levels rise. The home favourite can't do anything meaningful with his first few touches, though.

We need to talk about James Milner. The man is a machine.

He may well have found himself once again out of the starting XI at Liverpool this season with the arrival of some very healthy midfield competition.

So what does he do to ensure that is not the case? He runs a kilometre and a half further than anyone else on the Anfield pitch last weekend and sets up a goal.
