Chris Allen: Seriously? What is it with both Conte and Sarri missing Chelsea's biggest problem, and that is they need a striker. Chelsea's biggest mistake was getting rid of Diego Costa.

  2. Dendoncker: I am ready to give everythingpublished at 15:11 British Summer Time 9 August 2018

    Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolves' new signing Leander Dendoncker speaks to Wolves TV for the first time, he says: "I'm very happy to be here, it's a dream for every player to play in the Premier League. I hope I can help the team as fast as possible.

"This is the biggest league in the world so it's very nice to play every week in here. They told me if I come here I will become a better player so we'll see, I'm very excited to start.

"I followed Wolves a bit last year and I saw they did really good, winning a lot of games, playing good football. I think it's an ambitious club so I am ready to give everything."

This is all too sensible, calm and serene. I miss the Aug 31st comedy of clubs losing a few games, panicking and splashing out huge sums on mediocre players (if they can work the fax machine).

Cardiff City are closing in on a loan deal for Bournemouth’s Harry Arter.

Cardiff are confident they can complete a loan deal for the Republic of Ireland midfielder.

Former Charlton trainee Arter, 28, made 23 appearances for Bournemouth last season, having joined the club from Woking in 2010.

Earlier today Cardiff signed Victor Camarasa on a season loan from Real Betis.

You never really know how good/bad a club’s transfer window has been until the games start. Remember some people raved about Everton’s “great business” this time last year. We all know how that turned out.

A top-quality swap move in 2006 saw Chelsea sign England left-back Ashley Cole from Arsenal in exchange for £5m and France defender William Gallas.

After a successful eight years at Stamford Bridge, Cole went on to Roma and LA Galaxy - where he is still playing at the age of 37.

Gallas continued his tour of London with a move to Tottenham and ended his career at Perth Glory.

Think finishing 10th could be the worst thing to happen to Newcastle. Just gives Ashley an out excuse all the time. I'd probably have more respect for Rafa if he walked now, however much I love him.

Nottingham Forest boss Aitor Karanka tells BBC Radio Nottingham Sport about the potential signing of Huddersfield defender Michael Hefele... “I think we can do something, but I can’t confirm anything at the moment as the club is still working...”

And on a potential deal for West Ham’s Sam Byram... “It’s a loan, so we don’t have a problem (with the 17:00 BST deadline), so if it’s not Byram, another right-back will arrive (before the end of August)...

Anon: No one should be worried about spurs, top quality squad. No real players available that are big upgrades without paying stupid money. Levy doing business the right way.

Tony: As a Man Utd fan the Courtois deal is great business for us. Finally David De Gea is staying! Something positive at the end of the day.

Darren Thompson: Man Utd don't need a centre-back, their problem is going forward. We conceded one more goal than Man City last season but scored 36 less. Maybe Jose is sending rumours around to protect the likes of Sanchez, Pogba and Rashford who need to perform better.

Chris Baldwin: This was always going to be a quiet window for Spurs. Who could they buy to improve their first team that wouldn’t command massive wages or transfer fees that Spurs simply don’t pay. Even if they did would a £50m striker want to play second fiddle to Harry Kane?

Still no sign of that much needed striker, but it looks as though Brighton could have a new right-back.

Reports from Spain suggest that Valencia's Martin Montoya is going to turn down Fulham to move to the Amex.

We're already quite well stocked at right-back, but a player of Montoya's quality would be a definite upgrade. Ezequiel Schelotto is great at crosses but his defending leaves a lot to be desired and the genetic jackhammer Bruno may be handing out a pummelling to Father Time currently, but surely age is going to catch up with him as he quickly approaches his 40s.

  20. Has this window been busier as a result of the changes?published at 14:49 British Summer Time 9 August 2018

    In a word. No.

The number of transfers in the summer window has been dropping each year since 2014 - but this year has seen a dramatic fall.

There were slightly more transfers, 27, in June this year than past years [one more than 2015] - but July saw just 37 compared to 52, 57, 46 and 55 in the past four years.

Clubs do not appear to be squeezing lots of transfers into this short window - there were only 13 in August before today...
