  1. 'Free hit for Brighton'published at 12:31 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2018

    Brighton v Chelsea (13:30 GMT)

    Jonathan Pearce
BBC Match of the Day commentator

If Chelsea are to convince the doubters, they need to win this as comfortably as they did last season: a 4-0 cruise. Willian and Hazard were brilliant that day. Their recent inconsistency has personified the team's patchy form.

Will it be the Chelsea who were dreadful at Spurs? Or the team so good against Manchester City? The capable first-half side at Wolves or the shambolic second-half outfit there?

On the back of six points from their last nine, Brighton have a free hit. There's no pressure.

If they start on the front foot they can expose the visitors, especially in the air. That's why Maurizio Sarri must start Olivier Giroud. His aerial power in both boxes could be key.

Welcome to St Mary's, where Ralph Hasenhuttl has penned his first set of programme notes.

"I want to take the fans with us," he says. "The kind of football we want to play will show them that. When we develop, as a club and with the fans, I think something can grow here which is remarkable.

"The aim (at Leipzig) was to capture the ball, switch and quickly advance, in not more than 10 seconds. When we are in our groove and our game flows we are not easy to stop."

He knows what he wants but can this Southampton squad deliver it? They take on Arsenal at 13:30 GMT live on 5 Live Sport.

  6. 'Hughton deserves more credit'published at 12:28 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2018

    Brighton v Chelsea (13:30 GMT)

    Nigel Reo-Coker
Former West Ham midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

I think Brighton boss Chris Hughton deserves a lot more credit for what he's done in his managerial career. He's done great everywhere he's gone.

He's quiet, he likes to get on with it and isn't too interested in praise. It's down to other people to say 'you've done a fantastic job'. He deserves to have his name out there [linked with bigger clubs].

You never know [if he can do a bigger job] unless you give him the opportunity.

  8. 'It's like preparing for two different teams'published at 12:23 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2018

    Brighton v Chelsea (13:30 GMT)

    Glenn Murray
Brighton striker on BBC Radio 5 live

A club of our stature, everyone has to defend at certain points. We can't carry people. It's about stopping Chelsea playing out. The safest place to let them have the ball is at centre-back and try to stop all their avenues from there.

I'd rather it was raining crosses but sometimes you have to do the dirty work too.

I think a lot of teams identified Jorginho as being the pass-master, the man who made them tick. Now they play rotation to get more people on the ball.

It's like preparing for two different teams [compared to Chelsea last season]. They play a totally different brand of football. They're expansive. They want to spread the game as wide as possible and create one-on-ones until we tire in the 70th or 80th minute.

  9. Tough at the bottompublished at 12:21 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2018

And this is how it looks at the bottom.

Crystal Palace were the only side in the bottom six to pick up a win on Saturday, with their 1-0 victory over Leicester lifting them above Cardiff into 15th and five points clear of the drop zone.

Fulham missed the chance to climb off the foot of the table after they were beaten by a resurgent West Ham. Huddersfield and Burnley were also beaten, meaning Southampton can move out of the bottom three with a win this afternoon.

So how do Saturday's results leave the state of play at the top of the Premier League?

Champions Manchester City are back on top after their victory over Everton. Liverpool can, of course, move back to the summit with a win over Manchester United this afternoon.

But do we have a third entrant in the title race? Tottenham may have left it late against Burnley yesterday but their win at Wembley means Mauricio Pochettino's side are just three points behind Liverpool in third. They are also five points clear of London rivals Chelsea and Arsenal, who will look to narrow that gap again this afternoon.

Manchester City moved back to the top of the Premier League, for now at least, with a 3-1 victory over Everton at Etihad Stadium.

Tottenham are third but needed a stoppage-time goal from Christian Eriksen to edge past battling Burnley at Wembley.

Wolves have won three successive games in the top flight for the first time since 1980 and are now just one point outside the top six after beating Bournemouth 2-0.

West Ham are also on the up after they won at Fulham while Watford scored three stunning goals in their win over Cardiff.

    Here's a round-up of yesterday's action.

Defeat at Anfield would mean that Manchester United had made their worst ever start to a Premier League season.
