    Chelsea 1-0 Newcastle United

    David Pleat
Former Tottenham manager on BBC Radio 5 live

Rondon lost his angle as the ball ran across his body onto his left foot. It wasn't far from the post but it was never controlled

If the score stays at 1-0, I just wonder if Rafael Benitez changes his tactics, or does he wait until it's maybe 2-0? He doesn't need five at the back.

Newcastle effort! Salomon Rondon and Christian Atsu, a back-and-forth in the Chelsea half, with Rondon then swinging a left boot at it. It skews wide, but the Magpies are definitely improving.

To David Pleat's point, we've seen almost nothing of Eden Hazard in the first quarter of the game. He'll probably bag a hat-trick now.

We haven't seen any of those twinkling runs by Eden Hazard,

We wait for those. He's one of the only players who can turn his man left or right.

Its a mistimed tackle from Matt Ritchie, perhaps late but I think he went for the ball.

I think Cesar Azpilicueta went down in a rather dramatic tumble. At first I thought it was a penalty.

Over the bar! David Luiz arriving late, his header deflected over, possibly by one of his own team-mates.

Danger coming up. Matt Ritchie sliding on César Azpilicueta. Free-kick on the edge of the Newcastle box, next to the byeline.

To be fair, this is a little better from the visitors - a few passes put together in the Chelsea half. Nothing yet as audacious to encroach into the home box, but definite progress.

    Chelsea 1-0 Newcastle United

    David Pleat

Newcastle are unable to get any rhythm and they desperately need that

They need to show Chelsea they can build passes and then they can make a chance out of it. Possibly.

They are missing the injured Jonjo Shelvey.

Very quiet at the Bridge, as if the home faithful think this one might already be done. It's not exactly bubbling with entertainment either. That will probably suit Rafa for now. Keep it tight, keep it dull for as a long as possible.

David: So Newcastle's defensive frustrate-the-opposition approach is working well, I see. If we don't beat Cardiff at home next week I think we are doomed

Newcastle haven't touched the ball inside the Chelsea box yet. To be fair, they haven't touched it in many other places either.

The problem for Newcastle is that there is unrivaled possession for Chelsea in the middle.

Newcastle don't get near them as they are just happy to sit back.

Zero pressure on the ball when it is in the Chelsea half. Kepa may as well put his slippers on. It's as if Newcastle need their passports to get over the halfway line.

  18. Postpublished at 16 mins

If you're Rafa Benitez, what do you do now? Your gameplan has gone. If you try to get back in it, you will probably get hit. Do you try to keep it at one for as long as possible then hope to nick something later?

If I was Salomon Rondon I would try to get onto David Luiz as much as possible when Chelsea hive the ball as he is the one who can play the long ball, as we have already seen.

Rondon should get tighter on him as Rudiger does not play that type of ball.

Push on Martin Dubravka by Antonio Rudiger, free-kick given. A hoof up field is about the only way Newcastle can get the ball out of their own half at the moment.
