Thomas Tuchel has tried to play Marquinhos in that defensive midfield role in Ligue 1, and he looks as if has gone and stood right in front of those two central defenders.

Brilliant stuff from Neymar, who drives through the middle of the pitch, showing superb strength to hold off a couple of challenges. His forward ball is a tad heavy, though, and Liverpool recover possession.

PSG start on the front foot, pushing into the Liverpool half. Every successful challenge from a home player getting a big cheer, especially when it is on Neymar.

PSG coach Thomas Tuchel marched very purposefully to his seat in the technical area probably trying not to revive any memories of his last visit here, when he was in charge of the Borussia Dortmund side that twice cast aside a two-goal lead to lose the Europa League quarter-final in 2016.

That PSG forward line is frightening. Liverpool are used to having the strongest front three in any game at Anfield. Without Firmino, they've been topped tonight.

It's how they perform on the night, though.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BT Sport: "Yesterday Roberto Firmino could not look properly but today he has improved. He is an option on the bench. Daniel Sturridge is in top shape and I'm really happy with that. His place in the side is deserved while we have the option of bringing on Firmino."

The PSG front three are as good as anything around, and hey have a very talented midfield. The one thing I question, is when they get to the latter stages, they tend to crumble.

If they are going to win the Champions League, this is the year. There is no reason why they cannot win it.

Anfield is looking lovely under the lights tonight, despite the drizzle, and the stadium is surely is going to play its part in the end result.

What was obvious to anyone who was either here, watching on TV or listening on BBC Radio 5 live at any of the club's European games last season, was how big a part the Anfield atmosphere played in Liverpool's run to the Champions League final.

The Reds won four and drew two of their home games in this competition last in 2017-18, including those memorable victories over Manchester City and Roma in the knock-out stage and a 7-0 demolition of Spartak Moscow in their group.

More of the same is needed tonight, but it might surprise you to see that Liverpool's recent home record in this competition is not among the European elite.

Their Anfield CL win % of 52.9% in the past 10 seasons, with nine wins from 17 home games, puts them down in 23rd place, below FC Porto, Malaga, Olympiakos and Bordeaux.

There is another English club at the very top of the tree, though. No, not Manchester City, Chelsea or Manchester United - it's Leicester City, who won four of their five home games in the 2016-17 season.

The Champions League trophy was literally within spitting distance of the Liverpool players roughly four months ago.

But for a couple of Karius clangers and a bit of Bale brilliance they might have gotten even closer to the big jug-eared beauty.
