"There wasn't a great deal of thinking on behalf of the club," explained McCann.

"I think Steven just felt he wanted a new challenge. We are not going to keep anyone here against their will and he goes with our very best wishes.

"He just felt it was the right time for him to go."

    Aberdeen v Kilmarnock (15:00)

Kilmarnock manager Steve Clarke tells BBC Scotland: "I think we've had a good window. We've worked hard over summer. The proof will be there over the course of the season.

"It'll be interesting to see how we do against Aberdeen. All the games last season were close, but Aberdeen always seem to find the match winning moment. Hopefully we can address that this season."

  4. Lowe, Stewart and Tshibola debutpublished at 14:46 British Summer Time 1 September 2018

    Aberdeen v Kilmarnock (15:00)

On-loan Derby County left-back Max Lowe goes straight into the starting line-up for Aberdeen.

He is one of four changes from the 1-1 draw with Hibs. Niall McGinn returns from injury, while Shay Logan and Stevie May start. Tommie Hoban and James Wilson are injured, while Frank Ross and Sam Cosgrove drop to the bench.

Former Aberdeen midfielder Greg Stewart makes his Kilmarnock debut against his old club.

Aaron Tshibola is also in the starting line-up after rejoining the club on loan from Aston Villa, while Eamonn Brophy replaces Kris Boyd up front.

There is no place in the squad though for deadline-day signings Jack Byrne and Bright Enobakhare.

Mikael Ndjoli also drops to the bench, while Gary Dicker is suspended after Killie failed to overturn his red card in the 1-0 defeat against Hearts.

    Livingston v Hibernian (15:00)

After scoring a late equaliser against Aberdeen last week, striker Jamie Maclaren returns to Neil Lennon's starting line-up as Hibs look to maintain their unbeaten start, with Oli Shaw dropping to the bench.

In the only other change, 21-year-old striker Lewis Allan makes his first start for Hibs as David Gray misses out through injury.

Gary Holt also makes two changes for his first home game in charge of Livingston.

Jack Hamilton scored his first goal for the club in the win over St Mirren last week but isn't rewarded with a starting place up front - he's among the substitutes.

He's replaced with new loan signing and Angolan international Dolly Menga, while midfielder Keaghan Jacobs comes in for Steven Lawson.

Hamilton have won only one of their last 11 matches against St Johnstone.

That was here at New Douglas Park on April Fools’ Day in 2017 when Saints played the second half with nine men.

That was because two Saints players - Richard Foster and Danny Swanson - decided to have a fight as the half time whistle sounded.

Strangely, Swanson has rejoined the Perth club only this morning after being released by Hibs following a season at Easter Road. There won’t be a repeat today as Swanson won’t feature.

    Aberdeen v Kilmarnock (15:00)

Derek McInnes has injury problems at Aberdeen, with Tommie Hoban, James Wilson, Scott McKenna and Mary Reynolds all on the injury list.

The Dons manager tells BBC Scotland Tommie Hoban may require surgery.

"James Wilson was down to start today but unfortunately he's got a little bit of tightness in his hamstring," he said.

"Tommie Hoban hurt himself in the goal last week at Hibs. He carried on manfully, but he needs surgery. We're sending him to Watford next week for a second opinion, but we'll be without him for a period of time."

Queen of the South v Ayr United (15:00)

    Jane Lewis
BBC Sport Scotland at Palmerston Park

Ayr manager Ian McCall says the club knocked back two bids for striker Lawrence Shankland yesterday.

McCall said the bids were from Scottish clubs but wouldn’t say which clubs had made offers.

Both clubs tables bids of £175,000, but the Championship leaders quickly declined the offers.

Shankland has been in terrific form this season, scoring nine goals in all - three in the league and seven in the League Cup.

  12. Stubbs faces familiar foespublished at 14:30 British Summer Time 1 September 2018

Heart of Midlothian v St Mirren (15:00)

St Mirren manager Alan Stubbs did battle with Hearts six times when in charge of city rivals Hibs. He had a pretty good Edinburgh derby record too, losing just once - a 2-1 Tynecastle loss in the first meeting of the 2014-15 season, a match in which Hibs captain Liam Craig missed a penalty.

Stubbs won two derbies and drew twice as Easter Road head coach.

Most famously, his team hauled themselves back from 2-0 down in Gorgie en route to their famous 2016 Scottish Cup triumph.

  13. Villa made 'strong offer' for McKennapublished at 14:29 British Summer Time 1 September 2018

    Aberdeen v Kilmarnock (15:00)

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes explains to BBC Scotland why the club rejected the bid from Aston Villa for defender Scott McKenna.

"I had a conversation with Aston Villa," he said. "We said there was no encouragement to sell Scott but also said 'if you're going to make an offer, don't leave it until the last minute because you'll just be left with more resistance'.

"It certainly wasn't £7m [the offer] that has been reported. It was a strong offer, but it was rejected both in terms of the value and the timing."

There's one change for St Johnstone, with Blair Alston replacing the injured Murray Davidson in midfield.

Ross Callachan, previously of Hearts, and Tristan Nydam, on loan from Ipswich Town, are on the bench.

  16. It's Miller time for Dundeepublished at 14:22 British Summer Time 1 September 2018

    Dundee v Motherwell (15:00)

Kenny Miller, whose last gig was as Livingston player-manager, goes straight into the Dundee team after signing a deal with the Dens Park club during the week.

The Dens Park outfit currently sit pointless at the foot of the table and manager Neil McCann will be hoping he can magic up three points this afternoon. Cammy Kerr, Lewis Spence and Genséric Kusunga also come into the side.

Unsurprisingly, Motherwell's Stephen Robinson has stuck with the same starting XI that dramatically held Rangers to a 3-3 draw last Sunday.

  17. 'Not replacing Dembele is the biggest issue'published at 14:19 British Summer Time 1 September 2018

    Dembele row rumbles on

    Michael Stewart
Former Scotland midfielder on BBC Sportsound

The statement yesterday was pretty clear. Brendan Rodgers said no player has ever been told they can leave at a certain time in a pre-agreed deal.

It's a very difficult situation for Celtic to be in. Stick or twist, there's going to be criticism.I just felt to lose one of your best players and not have the replacement, that's the bigger issue here.

It's obvious that very soon these players would be moving on and there needed to be a succession plan in place and it's not worked. That's the biggest criticism.

  20. McKinnon exit leaves Morton jiltedpublished at 14:13 British Summer Time 1 September 2018

Partick Thistle v Greenock Morton (15:00)

    Chick Young
    BBC Scotland at Firhill

The Morton board, interim coaching team of Derek Anderson and John Sutton and players look a little shell shocked still after the stunning departure of manager Ray McKinnon to Falkirk.

I understand the Greenock club are considering legal action against the Bairns and believe that McKinnon was spoken to long before Falkirk asked for permission to approach him.

The Greenock Telegraph has summed up the situation in a one-word back page: "Judas!"
