What you will look at, as I did when I went from Preston to Sunderland, is that you could be the one to galvanise it and then see what could happen in the longer term.

As I found out to my consequence, when it doesn't work out, you could end up losing your job. If he was approached and if he decided to take it, he'll think Aston Villa could get back to the Premier League.

He's got a good squad at Brentford that on their day are as good as anybody. But are they the same size as Aston Villa? No they're not.

Over the last few days it's chopped and changed. Dean was favourite, then David Moyes was and now it's Thierry Henry.

Aston Villa is a huge club. I was at Villa for two years and I didn't realise how big the club is until I was there.

At Brentford Dean's got the running of any transfers, has a big input and picks the team, but when a team like Villa come knocking, he'll be foolish if he wasn't taken aback by wanting to go there.

As mentioned before kick-off, Brentford boss Dean Smith has been strongly linked with the managerial vacancy at Aston Villa - the club he supported as a child.

BBC Radio 5 live pundits Simon Grayson and Chris Waddle have been having their say...

  4. HALF-TIMEpublished at 13:19 British Summer Time 6 October 2018

    Leeds 0-0 Brentford

So an entertaining, but goalless half ends at Elland Road.

Brentford will be the happier of the two sides, having forced a few saves and hit the bar, but no breakthrough yet.

    Leeds 0-0 Brentford

Leeds clear a great low ball from Brentford at the near post.

Out for a corner and the ball almost drops to a Brentford head before the Leeds keeper smothers it.

Close for Leeds. Ezgjan Alioski gets the ball on the left after a great period of pressure and Samu Saiz shoots over and wide.

He claims it took a slight deflection, but a goal kick is given.

    Leeds 0-0 Brentford

The stats back up the view that Brentford are having the better of this game.

Brentford have eight attempts to the two by Leeds, and the visitors have hit the target twice, with the home side forcing Bees keeper Luke Daniels into just one stop.

Leeds are starting to get a bit more possession now, but they can't find that killer pass.

Brentford are defending well inside their own third of the field and look dangerous on the break - Sergi Canos having a shot blocked by Luke Ayling.

    Leeds 0-0 Brentford

Mateusz Klich will be pleased to hear the half time whistle. The Leeds midfielder has lost one of his contact lenses.

After a lot of poking and prodding he was sent back out, but it turns out they couldn't put it in, so he can see clearly in one eye, but not in the other.

If he makes a mistake between now and half time we'll know why.....

    Leeds 0-0 Brentford

A lucky escape for Luke Ayling as he's caught ball-watching and Brentford's Ollie Watkins is put through.

But the striker is offside and blasts his effort over - another warning for the Championship leaders though......

  12. Brentford hit the barpublished at 28 mins

    Leeds 0-0 Brentford

Brentford's Ollie Watkins has an effort deflected up and looped onto the bar.

It drops down to Neal Maupay - taking what seems like an age - and Brentford's top scorer mistimes his jump and allows Leeds to block and clear.

Another good chance for the visitors.

    Leeds 0-0 Brentford

Neal Maupay shoots wide from long range, when Bees team-mate Romaine Sawyers could have been put through.

The chance came moments after some magical footwork from Leeds defender Pontus Jansson - he looked more Brazilian than Swedish!

    Leeds 0-0 Brentford

A lovely build up sees Leeds create their best chance of the afternoon so far.

Tyler Roberts shoots on the turn, but his low effort is well saved after a six or seven pass move gave him yard or two of space.

  15. Postpublished at 19 mins

    Leeds 0-0 Brentford

Sergi Canos picks up the ball on the left touchline and the Brentford forward skips past a couple of defenders before blasting a low shot straight at Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

Lovely bit of skill, the Bees might be on top right now.

Brentford's front three's work rate is excellent. They're not giving Leeds' defenders any time on the ball and forcing them to either go long or make a mistake.

Whether they can keep this pace up for 90 minutes we shall see.....

  17. Postpublished at 13 mins

    Leeds 0-0 Brentford

Mateusz Klich breaks from midfield and has Leeds' first effort, but his strike from 20 or so yards goes wide.

  18. Postpublished at 12 mins

    Leeds 0-0 Brentford

So close for Brentford. A sweeping counter attack sees Sergi Canos release Neal Maupay and the league's top scorer's shot across the face of goal is tipped around the post by Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

The Bees' corner is cleared by Leeds.

  19. Postpublished at 10 mins

    Leeds 0-0 Brentford

We're 10 minutes in and so far neither side has had a shot.

Leeds have just had a great move down the left, but the cross was cleared well by Brentford.

  20. Postpublished at 7 mins

    Leeds 0-0 Brentford

A late challenge from Luke Ayling on Brentford's Sergi Canos gives the Bees a free kick in a dangerous position on the right corner of the 18 yard box.

But the delivery was poor from Canos and Leeds clear easily.
