Anfield seems to take a collective breath whenever Lionel Messi gets on the ball in the final third - that is the only time the home fans are not booing Barcelona when they have possession, while Luis Suarez is being treated to a couple of chants he won't have heard here before. Two Barcelona players down. The crowd don't like it but sometimes players do get hurt. Jordi Alba fell on top of Clement Lenglet.

Magnus: Luis Suarez has to be one of the most unlikable players in modern football history.

London Money: Suarez is a wonderful player - provided he's on your side!

We mentioned before kick-off that this Barcelona team has an average age of 29, they need a refresh. They do have Frenkie de Jong incoming of course.

Good attack from the old men though, Andy Robertson has to clear from a waiting Arturo Vidal.

The pace of this game is just relentless. I'm amazed by Barcelona as every time they get a free-kick they are taking it quickly. I thought they would be trying to kill this game and control it at their pace.

Divock Origi is playing really well up there. A future at Anfield after all? This game is manic, Origi to Shaqiri, he loses the ball. Can Barca live with this tempo? Can Liverpool keep it up?

If the game slows down, Barca take control. You'd think.

Luis Suarez is getting a villain's reception at the moment. He goes down after winning a foul from Virgil van Dijk. The crowd don't like it.

Suarez is being booed all the time. If he scores he's 100% celebrating tonight...

Great ball from Virgil van Dijk down the left, Sadio Mane is electric at the moment and he finds Andy Robertson, who whistles in a shot. Marc-Andre ter Stegen nearly dives past it and the ball hits him in the chest.

You attack, we attack. Full-back to full-back for Liverpool, with a cutback finding Jordan Henderson, his stab on goal is headed clear by Gerard Pique. No matter the game, the occasion, I don't think I've ever seen Pique look 1% rattled. Playing in his slippers.

Every time I look up there's a player down at the moment. Liverpool are getting stuck in, as you'd want them to.

David Wallace: I'm not much of a football fan - 80+ years old and housebound. I've never even been to Liverpool. But I'm caught up in the sheer emotion of this. The crowd singing is stirring. The Liverpool fans are marvellous. It feels more like a national event than a local one.

Jordan Henderson punches the air in frustration as he's pinged in midfield. Again it's a firm tackle, again he gets the ball but he does catch Sergio Busquets, who is a master of that. Got the foul.

What a game we've got here. It's end-to-end.

Barcelona have come to life. Lionel Messi floats through the middle of the park, finds Philippe Coutinho on his left, his low shot is saved by Alisson and Luis Suarez is close to the rebound.

Messi then whistles a low shot in from 18 yards and it's two yards wide.

Breathless start!
