  4. 'Scotland can score'published at 16:49 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

    England v Scotland (17:00 BST)

    BBC One

Former Scotland goalkeeper Gemma Fay: "Scotland can score, they've got attacking threats in Erin Cuthbert, Kim Little and Claire Emslie.

"The style of goals they concede is a concern, they tend to be from individual errors, there hasn't been any spectacular goals against them.

"But the plus side of that is if you can cut that out, it's really hard to score against Scotland from a situation where you have to create something. I imagine they'll look to be quite tight defensively and break on the counter-attack."

  5. 'Unfair' to compare Euro 2017 sidespublished at 16:48 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

    England v Scotland (17:00 BST)

Defender Jennifer Beattie says it would be "unfair" to compare the current Scotland and England teams to their last meeting at a major finals.

"I would hope it would be a different game," said Scotland's Beattie, 28, who was injured during Euro 2017.

"People will naturally look at the result at the European Championship two years ago but I think that would be a little bit unfair considering how far our squad has come.

"It's a completely different coach; quite a few changes of faces. And the same with England."

  7. Star player - Nikita Parris (England)published at 16:46 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

    England v Scotland (17:00 BST)

Nikita Parris is arguably England’s most in-form player and comes into the tournament on the back of a hugely successful season.

The 25-year-old forward was named the Football Writers’ Player of the Year after lifting the FA Cup with Manchester City.

She recently confirmed a move to European champions Lyon, leaving England after becoming the all-time top scorer in the WSL.

The Liverpool-born player has sporting success running through her family too. Her sister Natasha Jonas is an Olympic boxer.

Her pace and directness is a big asset for Phil Neville’s team and she will be a threat to the Scotland back four today.

Phil Neville cuts a relaxed figure on the sidelines as his team go through their paces ahead of kick-off. He says he will need "ice in his veins" for his first ever World Cup match, as a player or manager, but admits this is "the pinnacle" of his career, so no doubt will be experiencing a healthy dose of nerves.

    Alex Scott
    Ex-England international on BBC One

The expectations for England are realistic. This team are used to making quarter-finals and semi-finals so the expectancy is to go one further. With expectation comes pressure and that's the thing for England, how will some of these players handle that? What will the fear of failure do for them?

  15. Star player - Erin Cuthbert (Scotland)published at 16:32 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

    England v Scotland (17:00 BST)

Erin Cuthbert remembers a time when she was a mascot for the Scotland national team while World Cup boss Shelley Kerr was in the team.

The striker is now one of the stars of the squad competing in their first finals and is a familiar name among WSL fans in England.

Cuthbert was named Chelsea’s Player of the Year following an impressive individual campaign which helped the Blues reach the Champions League semi-finals.

She scored Scotland’s first-ever goal at a major tournament in the 2-1 defeat by Portugal at Euro 2017 and was on the scoresheet in their final World Cup preparation match against Jamaica last week.

  18. England's impressive recordpublished at 16:27 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

    England v Scotland (17:00 BST)

Everything points in England's favour for this game. They have won 22 of the previous 25 meetings between the sides.

They have scored 85 goals to Scotland's 14. And the Lionesses have never failed to reach at least the quarter-finals.

England were unbeaten and finished top of their qualifying group, dropping just two points. They have lost just two of their last 11 World Cup matches.

But this is Scotland. And a Scotland side who have never been in better form. The stats go out of the window!
