Glasgow City coach Scott Booth: "I don't think the defender was in an unnatural position, it was incredibly harsh. But you have to say, what a penalty. Nikita Parris took it really well."

England are turning up the heat now. Nikita Parris and Lucy Bronze link-up on the right and it comes over to Ellen White.

She sees Fran Kirby unmarked on the edge of the box, lays it off and the Chelsea striker's shot bounces inches wide.

  4. Why was it a penalty?published at 17:18 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

Under football's new laws, which came in on 1 June, the handball rule changed.

The law remains that deliberate handball is an offence. But accidental handball will also be a free-kick (or penalty) if...

    • the ball goes into the goal off an attacker
    • a player gets the ball using his arm or hand and then scores, or creates a goalscoring opportunity
    • the player's arm or hand is above their shoulder (unless the player has controlled the ball onto his own arm or hand)
    • a player's hand or arm has made their body "unnaturally bigger"

Referee Jana Adamkova has deemed that Nicola Docherty's arms made her body unnaturally bigger as she went to block the cross.

The Scotland fans booed that decision, and they are still booing, but it looked a blatant handball by Nicola Docherty. You'll never guess what the river next door to the stadium is called? It's the river Var. Written.

Shelley Kerr has a strained look on her face. She can't believe her side are a goal down.

Caroline Weir makes a challenge on Ellen White and feels it. Manchester City team-mate Jill Scott pats her on the back and helps her to her feet.

The one thing Scotland didn't want to do is lose an early goal. They wanted to try and settle into the game and gain confidence. It's very harsh, there's no way Nicola Docherty meant that. It's a great finish by Nikita Parris, though.

That's the confidence Nikita Parris has got. Phil Neville spoke before the game about having ice in your veins and that girl certainly has it running through hers because what a penalty that was. It was a real pressure situation and was struck so well.

No bias here. That's definitely a penalty with today's rules.

It's definitely not deliberate but it is a penalty. Scotland need to re-group.

Confident as you like. Struck straight into the top left and out of reach for Lee Alexander.

Oh, we're off to VAR. They are checking to see whether Fran Kirby's cross hit Nicola Docherty's arm...

At times England have got four players going forward - Ellen White, the two wide players trying to combine and Fran Kirby making that fourth run in. It's those combinations, in and around the Scottish defence, that's where England will cause problems. They just have to move the ball a bit quicker, one and two touch.

Jill Scott wins a corner despite Jennifer Beattie's attempts to prevent it crossing the line. Beth Mead aims for Ellen White at the near post but it just skims off her head.

Nikita Parris keeps hold of the ball on the edge but Fran Kirby's whipping cross is cleared.

Very attacking start to this one, as both teams give their fans plenty to cheer. Erin Cuthbert is already looking a danger on the break. Phil Neville is patrolling his technical area cautiously but is urging Lucy Bronze down the wing. She'll have an earache by the end of the half.

  17. Can they keep this pace up?published at 17:10 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

    England 0-0 Scotland

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea and Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

The big players are already standing out. Lucy Bronze has seen a lot of the ball and when Erin Cuthbert gets on the ball, she wants to run with it.

I think we've had more excitement in the first few minutes here than in the 120 minutes between the England men's side against Switzerland.

The big question is: Can they keep this pace up?
