    Japan 0-1 England

Jill Scott's deflected shot falls kindly for Georgia Stanway on the edge of the box. Her strike then hits a defender and bounces out for a corner.

The resulting set-piece comes to Millie Bright at the back post but her header is easily caught by the keeper.

  2. Postpublished at 48 mins

    Japan 0-1 England

Jill Scott is in space on the right and has time to pick out her spot. She almost hits bullseye with a peach of a curler but the defender gets there just in front of Ellen White.

    Japan 0-1 England

England manager Phil Neville speaking to BBC at half-time: "We have to keep being ruthless in the final third. It looks like we keep on coming up against the best keepers."

    Japan 0-1 England

    Rachel Brown-Finnis
Ex-England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

England need to sharpen up and start playing like they did in the first 10-15 minutes. They looked well-rehearsed and fluid in the opening moments but then they fell away.

    Can England extend their lead?

  6. 'England need to slow the tempo'published at 21:00 British Summer Time 19 June 2019

    HT: Japan 0-1 England

    Rachel Yankey
Ex-England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

England need to slow the ball down so they can play it at their tempo. At the moment Japan are attacking and then England are rushing when they get on the ball when there isn't a need to.

Especially for Keira Walsh - if she can just get a foot on the ball and get her head up she can cut any team apart with her passing. I saw Steph Houghton having a word with her towards the end of that first half and I think that's what she'll have been saying to her.

  7. How the table lookspublished at 21:00 British Summer Time 19 June 2019

    HT: Japan 0-1 England

It's been a good night for England and Scotland so far. Can Shelley Kerr's side cling on against Argentina? They are up to third.

Unless Japan score at least two, England are going through as winners.

Hatters: Like every England side we don't look after the ball very well which invites pressure.

    Richard Legg: COME ON JAPAN!!!

    Japan 0-1 England

    Jordan Nobbs
    England midfielder on BBC One

As soon as Phil Neville came in he said he wanted us to pass more. To have the confidence to stay wide and come in deep.

Japan are currently getting the best out of us.

It’s hard to know if this fan, who’s come all the way from Osaka, will be happy or not about the first half.

He made the half-and-half shirt himself! The dedication to the cause is admirable.

  12. First half good...published at 20:55 British Summer Time 19 June 2019

    Japan 0-1 England

    Alistair Magowan
    BBC Sport in Nice

Very much like the opening game against Scotland, that was an impressive half from England. Can they keep the pedal down in the second period? It's a lot cooler than it was for their first game in Nice, which was held at 18:00 local time.

How different would it have been but for that Karen Bardsley save early on?

  13. 'England are predictable'published at 20:54 British Summer Time 19 June 2019

    HT: Japan 0-1 England

    Rachel Yankey
Ex-England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think Japan are a better team than Scotland and Argentina and it's been a difficult half for England but they've done well.

England are very predictable at the moment, they need to try a few different things and one of them could be either Millie Bright or Steph Houghton carrying the ball out from the back.

There were a few decent saves from keeper Ayaka Yamashita in that first half. Here is one of them to deny Georgia Stanway.

The main difference between women's and men's football is not skill, stamina, desire, it is the fact that women do not fall over as soon as they are touched by an opposition player which allows the game to flow.

  16. 'England have to stay switched on'published at 20:52 British Summer Time 19 June 2019

    Japan 0-1 England

    Alex Scott
    Ex-England international on BBC One

When fatigue sets in you have to stay concentrated and disciplined. I think England have got another gear, but if they switch off then Japan can hurt you.

  18. 'Average from England'published at 20:49 British Summer Time 19 June 2019

    HT: Japan 0-1 England

    Rachel Brown-Finnis
Ex-England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

It was an average performance from England. We started well - it was crisp, concise and incisive.

But thereafter they look their foot off the peddle a little and invited pressure onto them.

Ellen White's goal was her 30th for England on her 84th appearance. It’s also her third goal in 10 World Cup appearances.

  20. 'Move the ball a little quicker'published at 20:47 British Summer Time 19 June 2019

    HT: Japan 0-1 England

    Rachel Yankey
Ex-England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Every time an England player has the ball there's two or three Japan players around the ball.

If England move the ball a little quicker, Keira Walsh will have more time to get her head up to pick a pass.
