There's no World Cup fixtures tomorrow (I know, awful news), but England are back in action on Thursday when they take on Norway for a place in the semi-finals.

The Netherlands' opponents in the quarter-finals will be Italy.

They beat China 2-0 earlier today with a dominant performance which saw goals from Valentina Giacinti and Aurora Galli.

Here is that record-breaking goal for the Netherlands - their fastest at a World Cup.

The Netherlands have won each of their four games at the Women’s World Cup, after winning just one of their previous four in the competition (D1, L2).

Japan suffered just their third defeat in their nine knockout stage games at the Women’s World Cup (W5, D1), after losing to the USA in the 1995 quarter-finals and the 2015 final.

Both sides scored with their first shot on target of the game.

Lieke Martens’ opener for the Netherlands, timed at 16 minutes and two seconds, was their fastest-ever goal at a Women’s World Cup.

Japan, who have reached the final on the last two occasions, are going home at the last-16 stage.

Very disappointing for them. But they are a young side. The second youngest in the competition in fact. They have an average age of 24.

They even admitted before the tournament that the 2020 Tokyo Olympics were their main aim.

So there you have it. The Netherlands are into the last eight, where they will meet Italy. Here is the confirmed quarter-final draw.

Holding your nerve.

Silvio: Happy for the Netherlands, but I feel for Japan: these girls didn't deserve to lose. They were great, in particular in the second half. Sport can be cruel at times.

Christopher: Seriously hope the FA choose to disregard the new handball rule this season coming, because if they don't it's going to ruin it. Fans won't tolerate it for long. Mark my words.

It shouldn't have been a penalty. It hits her on the top of the arm and her arm is in a natural position.

Lyon teammates Shanice van de Sanden and Saki Kumagai - the Japan captain whose handball led to the penalty - are embracing in the centre.

Kumagai is crying but Van de Sanden speaks words of encouragement and consoles her club teammate.

The Netherlands were second best by a distance. The Japanese were so unlucky and they hit the post, and the cross bar and they were a joy to watch.

They didn't do anything particularly wrong and the Dutch were holding on by their fingernails.

Lieke Martens is understandably thrilled. She's clapped around the back by her teammates.

Those Dutch players on the bench charge onto the pitch to celebrate. The Japan players are distraught.

A few are bent over and others are stood alone, staring into space. They can't believe they have lost. They came so, so close.

It's all over. The European champions are into the quarter-finals!
