Souness, Houllier, Benitez and Rodgers have each struggled to build on Liverpool's second-place finishes
Liverpool's tally of 97 points last season was the most achieved by a Premier League runner-up and ensured their status as serious contenders for the 2019-20 title.
But the Reds have been here before.
Since their last league triumph in 1990, they have finished second on four other occasions, yet they have never gone on to lift the trophy, instead falling away badly in subsequent seasons.
So why do Liverpool have a history of failing to capitalise when in a position of strength?
BBC Sport examines the 1991-92, 2002-03, 2009-10 and 2014-15 campaigns and looks at whether it will it be different this time around. Read more here.

Norwich boss Daniel Farke, speaking to Sky Sports: "Last season doesn't count anymore. This is a new challenge for us and this is a tough place to go.
"It is important that we are able to keep the ball. If you try to park the bus and just defend there is no chance to show our quality in the game.
"It would be a great evening for the club (if we win), great for the confidence of the whole team but we are not naive and know this is one of the toughest games. One thing is for sure we want to be competitive tonight."

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp speaking to Sky Sports: "The boys want something that will change a lot of things. We start new. We are prepared, we should be ready and we have to prove that.
"I don't know at the moment (about what success would be this season), it depends how you perform over the year. Tonight we don't have to think about that, tonight we only think about Norwich and they deserve our respect because they are a special team. I respect a lot what their manager did there."

Liverpool v Norwich (20:00 BST)
Norwich scored an average of two goals a game in the Championship last season but will find it tough to be so free-scoring in the Premier League.
Nevertheless they have players who can hurt the opposition given the opportunity.
Striker Teemu Pukki was a real find for the Canaries last season, coming in on a free transfer and scoring 29 goals. He is the ultimate poacher, with 28 of his 29 goals coming from inside the box. If Liverpool make a mistake at the back, expect him to be there to pounce.
Meanwhile, attacking midfielder Emi Buendia provides the creative spark for Norwich. He has a great touch and eye for a pass and contributed eight goals and 12 assists last season.

A dozen new football laws came in this summer and will make their debut in the Premier League from tonight.
Among them are a change to the wording of the handball law. Accidental handball is now an offence if it leads to a goal, if a player's arm or hand is above their shoulder, or if it makes their body "unnaturally bigger".
Drop balls will now be uncontested, goal-kicks can be taken to a team-mate in the box, attacking teams cannot put their players in a defensive free-kick wall and coaches can be booked - as Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was in the Community Shield.
