    How does VAR work?

The VAR system which has become commonplace elsewhere in football is being used in the Premier League this season for the first time.

The Premier League's guiding principle is that it be used for "clear and obvious errors" and "serious missed incidents" in four types of match-changing incidents: goals, penalties, straight red cards and mistaken identity.

It aims to use VAR less frequently that some other competitions to achieve "minimum interference" to the game.

This is Liverpool's first game at Anfield since they won the Champions League yet there's no mention of his side's heroics in Jurgen Klopp's programme notes. Instead, the Reds boss offers his congratulations to Norwich on their return to the Premier League after a three-year absence before describing the Canaries as a "dangerous opponent".

Klopp adds: "I hear the words often, after a season like we just had, about how difficult or how important it is to 'go again'. I don't dislike the sentiment and there is merit to it, but simply 'going again' won't be enough.

"We need to be even stronger, even fitter, smarter, more committed, greater focus. Here is what I know for certain - it will be the toughest, most challenging season we will all face, and that's because of the quality we compete with."

So Lawro is backing the Reds to win, and continue their long unbeaten run - according to his results anyway - that has not seen them lose a game in his league tables since the final day of the 2015-16 season.

Do you think Lawro is right, and Liverpool will beat Norwich?

You can make your prediction here.

I will be at Anfield for this one, and I am expecting Liverpool to win.

They have got the Super Cup on Wednesday but I am expecting Jurgen Klopp to pick a strong side, and start with his regular front three even though Sadio Mane only came back to training this week.

Like any promoted team, Norwich's problem is not so much whether they will concede goals - which I think they will - it is whether they will get enough goals to be competitive.

We know how well Teemu Pukki did in the Championship, but will he score enough in the Premier League? I don't think so - I don't think he will get 10 league goals this season.

The Canaries will be full of running in this game, but I just don't see them causing Liverpool many problems. Of the three promoted teams, I think they are going to have the toughest time of it over the next few months.

    Lawro's prediction: 2-0

The first day of the new season - really can't beat it can you? The unknown, the high hopes, the excitement.

That early season optimism can, of course, quickly come crashing down with a bad opening day result but those first few hours before the first game - the walk to the stadium, catching up with old friends, soaking up the atmosphere from your seat and the excitement building as kick off approaches can't be beaten.

Few will back Norwich to pull off a surprise tonight but, this is the very first game of the season, everything is unknown...

Norwich's return to the top flight after a three-season absence is certainly welcome - they are a well-run club which has always liked to produce teams to play football worth watching.

It will be a return to Anfield for Stuart Webber. , externalNot perhaps a household name, but Webber was headhunted to Liverpool's recruitment team at the age of just 25 in 2009, and is the man who later brought David Wagner to manage Huddersfield Town and Daniel Farke to Norwich City - both notable successes who used their knowledge of the German second tier to great effect.

Like Wagner, Farke was previously the coach of Borussia Dortmund's second team. Unlike Wagner, he never worked with Jurgen Klopp - but the pair should find plenty to talk about once their teams have kicked off the 2019-20 season.

Three hours before kick-off, the sun was shining and there was a carnival atmosphere outside Anfield. But the rain, which was forecast to sweep in off the Irish Sea, has now arrived and looks set to stay.

That has not stopped a steady stream of Liverpool fans from having their picture taken in front of a new Trent Alexander-Arnold mural on a terrace house a stone's throw from the ground.

Business is booming for the merchandise stalls where new Champions League winning scarves are proving particularly popular.
