    Tottenham 0-1 Aston Villa

Tottenham are throwing everything at Villa early in this second half. It's a nice move between Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela to feed Harry Kane, whose left-footed drive is deflected wide for a corner. Villa defending well so far.

  2. VAR

John McGinn goes down in the box and Chris Kavanagh wants to check this...

The referee puts his hand to his ear, but is satisfied it's not a penalty. McGinn didn't even shout for it, but worth a check.

Moussa Sissoko drags a shot wideImage source, Getty Images

    What a chance!

Moussa Sissoko, in acres of space at the back post, has time to take a touch and set himself on the edge of the six-yard box but the Frenchman drags his effort across goal and off for a throw-in.

    Should have buried it.

  4. Postpublished at 48 mins

    Tottenham 0-1 Aston Villa

Quick start from Spurs in the second half. Moussa Sissoko gallops on to Kyle Walker-Peters' pass down the right and wins a corner. But Erik Lamela's delivery is headed clear.

    Tottenham 0-1 Aston Villa

Chance for Erik Lamela after a scramble in the Villa box, but Bjorn Engels does superbly well to get out and block the Argentine's strike. Moussa Sissoko was causing problems in the Villa area there and the visitors struggled to clear properly.

Fudge1: Here we go again..... chance spurring Spurssy. It’s not an ‘investment’ thing but rather a state of mind!

Craig Short: Spurs continuing their form from the back end of last season, with their first half performance being below par.

Tottenham had just one shot on target in that first half. Would love to by a fly on the wall for Mauricio Pochettino's half-time team talk...

Jack Grealish has looked dangerous in possession so far, picking the ball up in positions to trouble the Spurs defence and thread team-mates through on the Tottenham goal (at the top of this graphic). He could've been a Spurs player...

Paul Cate: Might not be a popular view, but relegation was what Villa needed. A wake up call. Compare this to the side that went down which had no fight whatsoever. It's chalk and cheese.

I think the general sense of feeling by Tottenham fans will be frustration. They had some good moments and certainly at the end of that half there were some half chances being created by the hosts. But give Aston their credit, they have taken advantage and scored from it. They have had some good chances themselves. Dean Smith will be well happy with that performance for their first game back at this level.

What a start to life back in the top flight for Aston Villa.

  15. CLOSE!published at 45 mins

    Tottenham 0-1 Aston Villa

Best move of the match from Tottenham so far.

Kyle Walker-Peters cuts it back for record signing Tanguy Ndombele, who curls a delicate chip into the area and Harry Kane is there to meet it.

You'd fancy the England striker to at least trouble Tom Heaton from there, but he nods over.

Kane with a glorious chance again moments later, scuffed wide with his left foot... his blushes are spared by the offside flag.

Great tackle from Harry Winks, sliding across the turf to dispossess Trezeguet on the halfway line. If he mistimed that, Villa were in. It came from another Spurs corner being easily cleared.

Villa are looking a threat on the break, they're good for their lead.

    Five minutes until the break.

This wasn't in the script for Mauricio Pochettino and co. Erik Lamela bundles his way forward and plays a one-two with Harry Kane.

Spurs then work it to Harry Winks, who fancies his chances from distance but drags a left-footed effort harmlessly wide. Poch is furious...

    Tottenham 0-1 Aston Villa

    Bradley Allen
Ex-QPR striker on BBC Radio London

It has been a little while since Villa have been at this level and I think you will see it in some of the players. The concentration might slip and they might tire if this pressure is kept up by Tottenham. I think Spurs have already found with that opening goal that the more they commit the more they are opening themselves up. Villa will be believing they can get another chance before half time.

Villa are troubling Spurs every time they go forward. This time Wesley rises highest to nod goalwards from Conor Hourihane's cross, but it's straight into the arms of Hugo Lloris.
