Nev Carman: Time to get behind the team and give Bruce a chance. Newcastle teaming with home supporters. Don’t see much evidence of a boycott.

Michael Mueller: As a Newcastle fan I’m happy to see Benitez go. No ambition whatsoever and his constant refusal to play attacking football was disgraceful.

Anyone else (I'm talking to neutral supporters here) quite excited to see how Leicester fare this season under Brendan Rodgers? Lots of young talent which you'd expect the former Liverpool and Celtic to give a licence to thrill, plus a solid spine of experienced players in Kasper Schmeichel, Jonny Evans and Jamie Vardy.

An eyebrow or two was raised when they splashed out £30m for Newcastle forward Ayoze Perez but apparently he's looked as sharp as his skin-fade haircut in pre-season.

Definitely one on the fantasy football radar...

Mark Selby: Arsenal’s turn now to kick off our season! Great kit, great attack, great optimism... until kick off where it will be back to normal for us with defeat

What kind of reception will Bruce get? Not the sort which Rafa Benitez got in what proved to be his final match at the end of last season, I'd imagine.

And how many fans will be at St James' Park? Plenty are expected to be heading to a major sports shop in the city centre.

Sterling service, memorable goals, countless trophies... the positions of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Frank Lampard as club heroes aren't likely to change even if their managerial spells at Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge end in disaster.

Steve Bruce, on the other hand, never played for Newcastle - but he is a boyhood fan having grown up watching the Magpies.

However, it has not been a popular appointment despite his black and white blood...

    Doubts must creep in.
