Ash: Everyone missing the fact it hit Bernardo Silva's arm in the buildup? That would have ruled out any goal scored. Would it therefore have ruled out the penalty?

Jason: I guess everyone missed the Silva handball onto TAA's arm? Typical

Liverpool have never previously lost any of the 232 Premier League matches at Anfield when they have led by two or more goals, drawing five and winning 227 of those matches.

That's the size of the task facing Manchester City at the moment.

Reza Sait: So Sheffield United had a goal disallowed for a TOE but that Salah goal stands? VAR must be a Liverpool supporter

Lam Bo: if VAR isn’t going to award an absolutely stone cold conclusive handball like that just get rid of it. Absolute joke. It’s meant to fix games, not ruin them

David Howell: Once again, the handball rule is the problem, and VAR is what makes us all aware of that problem.

Liz Tray: That is a penalty against TAA. Everyone can see it. But VAR fails again. Thereafter, 2 chances missed, 2 chances taken. Simple. We cannot win the title now.

Lestah Cithe: Both Liverpool's goals should have been chalked off. Man City should be one up. VAR needs to go.

The ball that hit Trent's arm came from a ricochet off Silva's arms, which would have ruled out any goal from that move anyway. Correct decision.

Alisson casually plays the ball out of defence to Fabinho. He has three Manchester City players in close proximity but he calmly dinks out to Trent Alexander-Arnold. The ability not to panic there with the quality of City's attacking players around him is hugely impressive.

Liverpool, as a whole, look calm and confident.

    Liverpool 2-0 Man City

Rodri pinches the ball off Sadio Mane, Bernardo Silva dances his way down the right and then fires in a cross aimed at Sergio Aguero at the far post. Liverpool clear but the ball comes back into their box but this time Aguero's flick is comfortably gathered by Alisson.

I told you my concern about City's makeshift back line, they don’t defend well.

This is absolutely brilliant from Robertson: he whipped the ball across, it bounces once and all Salah has to do it is to concentrate on the connection and use the pace of the ball to get it past Bravo.

Did not expect Salah to miss that and Manchester City are up against it!

GOAL - Liverpool 2-0 Man Citypublished at 14 mins

    Mo Salah

    Unbelievable!

Wonderful cross by Andy Robertson as he swings the ball towards the back stick where Mo Salah charges in to power a header into the back of the net.

Pep Guardiola slumps back in his seat and takes a frustrated gulp of his water. What a disastrous start for Manchester City.

Long, long way to go though.

    Liverpool 1-0 Man City

How has Sergio Aguero not scored!?

Kevin De Bruyne bends a free kick behind the Liverpool defensive line and Sergio Aguero peals away. Nine times out of 10 you back him to power a header into the back of the net but he appears caught in two minds and the ball flies past both him and then John Stones at the far post.

Just as Liverpool would have wanted it and a magnificent strike from Fabinho - but the usual VAR controversy as Manchester City were convinced they should have had a penalty.

Anfield is rocking and now Manchester City must respond. Electric start.

    Liverpool 1-0 Man City

    Chris Sutton

It is not a good clearance from Gundogan, he just brought the ball out to Fabinho who was 25 yards out.

But there will be controversy, Manchester City are convinced they should have had a penalty.

It did look like Trent Alexander Arnold’s arm was in an unnatural position. I think Alexander Arnold is a lucky lucky boy, it should have been a penalty.

  16. CLOSE!published at 9 mins

There was a nervous wait there for Liverpool fans as VAR checked the earlier incident when Trent Alexander-Arnold handled inside the box but a huge roar goes up as VAR backs the referee's original decision to say no penalty and the goal stands.

Sergio Aguero was fuming. Big moment, both in this game and potentially in the title race.

GOAL - Liverpool 1-0 Man Citypublished at 5 mins

    Fabinho

    What a goal!

Bernardo Silva's cross is cleared in the Liverpool box, but was there a handball by Trent Alexander-Arnold? Sergio Aguero is adamant it should be a penalty.

Referee waves play on and Liverpool storm up the pitch. Fabinho is given too much space 25 yards out and he thunders an unstoppable strike into the back of the net.

What a start to this game.

Liverpool are being put under early pressure by a couple of Manchester Coty set pieces. The visitors now have a free kick quite close to the corner flag.

Kevin de Bruyne's delivery is cleared out for a corner. De Bruyne delivers again, finding John Stones, but the defender glances well wide.

Early corner for Manchester City which is sent in low by Kevin de Bruyne. The ball is half cleared to Kyle Walker, playing back in his familiar position after that joyous stint in goal in midweek, but the fullback's shot is blocked.
