    Breaking

Liverpool v Sheffield United (20:00 GMT)

Just the one change for Jurgen Klopp. Naby Keita back in for Adam Lallana in the Liverpool side.

John Lundstram and David McGoldrick start for Sheffield United. They replace Callum Robinson and Muhamed Besic.

    Full team news to follow.

  2. 'Lallana is very important'published at 18:58 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2020

Liverpool v Sheffield United (20:00 GMT)

It's been a busy festive period for every club in the Premier League and Jurgen Klopp confirmed he is down to just 13 senior outfield players for today's match.

Youngsters Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliot and Neco Williams were all on the bench for the 1-0 win over Wolves last Sunday so could be given another chance today.

Midfielder Adam Lallana made only his third start of the season in that win. He's out of contract in the summer so what next for him?

"He is a very important player in this moment. What will happen in the future, we will see," said Klopp.

"But for him, wherever it is - here or somewhere else - the only important thing is that he can show he is 100% fit.

"He had some injury problems - completely done; trained, body is super fit, mind in a perfect place, enjoys the time here in the moment. You can see that in each second of training and when he plays, very influential."

Team news coming out very shortly. Here's what we know so far...

Liverpool midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri is out for at least a week with a hamstring problem that prevented him from playing against Wolves.

Fabinho, Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also remain sidelined.

Sheffield United will assess midfielder John Lundstram, who missed the defeat at Manchester City after injuring his ankle against Watford on Boxing Day.

Back-up goalkeeper Simon Moore could again miss out with a groin problem.

  5. New signings? Not likelypublished at 18:52 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2020

There will be a new face at Anfield today. Takumi Minamino, Liverpool's new signing from Red Bull Salzburg, is not eligible to make his debut until the FA Cup meeting with Everton on Sunday.

But he joined up with the squad on Tuesday and is now officially a Liverpool player.

Will anyone be joining him in the January transfer window? Jurgen Klopp says "not likely."

It's quiet here at the moment, but it won't be later. Liverpool have been on a steep upward trajectory for the last couple of years and the fans can sense something truly special might happen this season.

Thirty years isn't a long time for some clubs to wait for a top-flight league title, but it is for a select few. Liverpool won't get a better chance than they currently have to end that wait.

Make no mistake, though. This will be a test. If Sheffield United players can control a ball and play under pressure of any moment stepping in a little present from a local dog on Stanley Park, Anfield should be a doddle.

By kick-off it will be 364 days since Liverpool's last top-flight defeat. Keep Sheffield United at bay, and the Reds can complete a full year unbeaten in the league.

Jurgen Klopp's side are already over halfway towards an invincible league season.

Every team complains of festive fixture congestion but Sheffield United's run has been particularly gruelling with back-to-back away games at the Etihad and now Anfield.

Chris Wilder's side lost at Manchester City on Sunday but they have shown great resilience this campaign. Whenever they have been beaten, Sheffield United tend to bounce back - Wilder's side have not lost consecutive league games all season.

  9. Wilder's frustrations at Citypublished at 18:43 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2020

Liverpool v Sheffield United (20:00 GMT)

Sheffield United lost 2-0 to Manchester City in their last outing but Chris Wilder wasn't happy with interference from the referee.

He should have stopped the game after getting in the way of a pass which led to Manchester City taking the lead said the Blades boss.

They were upset Sergio Aguero's goal was allowed to stand because referee Chris Kavanagh was in the way of John Fleck who miscontrolled the ball, which allowed Kevin de Bruyne to set up the Argentine.

De Bruyne added the second as Sheffield United lost away from home for the first time since 19 January.

"I've been to see the referee and he has been honest about it. We make mistakes and I believe he made one too," Wilder told BBC Sport.

"It happened that quick and I thought he could have been helped by his colleagues a little bit."

So if Liverpool win tonight, they will have gone an entire year unbeaten in the Premier League. Their last defeat was against Manchester City at the Etihad on 3 January.

Liverpool v Sheffield United (20:00 GMT)

Tottenham fell further behind in the race for a top-four spot in the Premier League with a defeat at Southampton yesterday, with rivals Chelsea held to a 1-1 draw at Brighton.

Fifth-placed Manchester United also missed the chance to narrow the gap on fourth when they were beaten 2-0 at Arsenal.

Second-placed Leicester City kicked off the new year with a comfortable 3-0 win over Newcastle. And defending champions Manchester City picked up a 2-1 win over Everton.

Aston Villa moved out of the relegation zone with a 2-1 victory against Burnley, Crystal Palace got a late equaliser at Norwich City, West Ham thrashed Bournemouth 4-0 in David Moyes' first game in charge and Watford beat Wolves 2-1.

    Here's a handy round-up.

  13. A test to the unbeaten runpublished at 18:32 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2020

Liverpool v Sheffield United (20:00 GMT)

It's wet and it's windy for Liverpool to play their sixth game in 17 days. Sheffield United are in town, boasting an away record that has seen them lose just once on the road. An evening ripe for an upset? Possibly.

For all of the Blades' quality - which they have used to fine effect to draw at Chelsea, Wolves and Spurs in this return campaign in the top-flight, the Reds start as firm favourites. The reason? Well you can take your pick from them being European and world champions, unbeaten in the Premier League in 36 games and boasting players the envy of every other club.

If they avoid defeat tonight Jurgen Klopp's side will go a full year without a league defeat. Another landmark to add to a burgeoning collection.

League leaders Liverpool could become just the third team in Premier League history to go a year unbeaten.

They have not lost in 50 games at Anfield and are looking to extend their lead at the top of the table to 13 points, with a game in hand.

Sheffield United have had a brilliant start to the season so can they carry that on in 2020? Victory today would boost them up to fifth place in the league table.

    All to play for.
