Neil Fogarty: Can a game be so bad that Match of the Day refuse to show it?

MOTD will have more action from those in the stands than on the pitch tonight. BBC One, 22:25 GMT.

Big Dunc can go back into the coaching team with his head held high after guiding Everton to an unbeaten three games. He also leaves a tie light, having given the one he was wearing today away to a young fan.

A memento for him to, er, use in his first job interview? Maybe a wedding? Putting it in a frame would be insane.

  3. 'Both are well clear of relegation'published at 14:33 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

Newcastle United v Crystal Palace (17:30 GMT)

    Martin Fisher
    Match of the Day commentator

If it's a pre-Christmas goal feast you're looking for then you might want to give this one a miss - just five scored in the last five meetings, and two of those were penalties!

This season, only Watford have scored fewer than Newcastle and Palace but the latter two sides have fared much better in other aspects of the game, meaning both are well clear of the relegation picture.

A win could potentially lift Roy Hodgson's men as high as sixth, while even the biggest doubter of Steve Bruce should note that Newcastle are six points better off than at the same stage last season under the much revered Rafa Benitez.

  4. 'Scrappy and leggy but we fought it out'published at 14:31 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

    Everton 0-0 Arsenal

    Everton

Everton interim manager Duncan Ferguson on BT Sport: "We wanted three points but what a fantastic performance from us. I couldn't have asked anymore from the players - they've been fantastic for me.

"It was a bit scrappy and we were a bit leggy after Wednesday but we fought it out and we got a point and a clean sheet."

On the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti: "It's fantastic for the club for someone of that pedigree to come in. I haven't spoken to him yet but hopefully I will tonight over a couple of glasses of red wine."

  5. 'Brighton have added a cutting edge'published at 14:30 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

Brighton v Sheffield United (15:00 GMT)

    Tony Husband
    Match of the Day commentator

A year ago, Graham Potter and Chris Wilder were managing Championship clubs and, in what might be a sign of a renaissance of British managers in the Premier League, both are prospering after stepping up.

Wilder's steered the Blades into the Premier League and has emboldened most of the squad which got promoted with the belief they too can achieve at the higher level.

If they can make it nine top-flight away games without defeat they will match Burnley's record for a promoted club, set 72 years ago.

Potter has kept faith with most of the squad he inherited from Chris Hughton, but in Neal Maupay and Leandro Trossard, Albion have added a cutting edge and the Amex fans are lapping up the football. I'm hoping the first top-flight meeting between this pair doesn't disappoint.

  6. 'Cherries will face very different test to Chelsea win'published at 14:28 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

    Bournemouth v Burnley (15:00 GMT)

    Ben Andrews
    MOTD commentator

Seven seasons in - and still going strong - the Premier League's two longest-serving bosses are entitled to a bit of mutual back-patting this weekend, even more so now that both have snapped their losing streaks.

Chris Wood has scored three times in his four top-flight appearances against Bournemouth, so will be desperate to pass a fitness test. The Kiwi's latest match-winning header against Newcastle took his tally to seven goals in his last 10 games, but Bournemouth's win at Chelsea was the league's big story of last weekend, achieved after five straight defeats - and with seven regulars missing.

Improving the home form is the Cherries' next aim, but their injury-hit defence will face a stern and very different kind of test to that of Stamford Bridge, as Burnley bid for what would be just a second away win of the campaign.

  7. 'A huge opportunity'published at 14:26 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

Aston Villa v Southampton (15:00 GMT)

    Conor McNamara
    Match of the Day commentator

Dean Smith is going to be hearing the phrase 'six-pointer' a lot in the next week or so. Villa have three teams below them in the table, and those are his next three opponents.

While this means three highly-pressured games, it is also a huge opportunity. Arguably these are the teams that Villa can beat. All but one of the 15 points earned by them so far have been against sides currently in the bottom half.

If Southampton win here, they will move out of the relegation zone for Christmas. The last time Saints were in the bottom three on Christmas Day was 2004 - they were relegated that season.

    Everton 0-0 Arsenal

    John Acres

Everton probably shaded it overall but it was poor.

There's a lot of work for Carlo Ancelotti to do as Everton manager and possibly even more for Mikel Arteta to do at Arsenal.

Terrible from Everton. This is Arsenal's U23 side - and their U23 side isn't even any good! Not is their youth side. Pathetically poor from the Toffees.

The initial free-kick is headed away, Tom Davies can't get the ball back into the box and when it is eventually delivered Dominic Calvert-Lewin and then Michael Keane send the ball back to Jordan Pickford to boot straight out of play.

    Quality stuff.

Yerry Mina is down and holding his groin. Sidibe helps him out by holding his legs and jiggling them a bit. Is that an endorsed treatment? It does get Mina back on his feet, but he doesn't look happy.
