  2. Saka at left-back?published at 11:38 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

    Everton v Arsenal (12:30 GMT)

So, it looks like Bukayo Saka might be playing left-back for Arsenal. Interesting.

An attacking three of Reiss Nelson, Gabriel Martinelli and Emile Smith Rowe behind Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is a real show of faith in youth.

  5. 'Great club with a rich history'published at 11:28 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

Carlo Ancelotti to Evertonfc.com: “This is a great club with a rich history and a very passionate fan base. There is a clear vision from the Owner and the Board to deliver success and trophies. That is something that appeals to me as a manager and I am thrilled at the prospect of being able to work with everybody at the Club to help make that vision a reality.

“I have seen from the performances in the last two weeks that the players are capable of so much. The work Duncan has done is a great credit to him. Strong organisation, strong discipline and the right motivation are some of the key ingredients in football and I’m pleased that he will be part of my backroom team moving forward.”

    Everton v Arsenal (12:30 GMT)

As we know already, Duncan Ferguson will be in charge for today's game against Arsenal. But it will be his last as caretaker boss.

Ancelotti is going to be at Goodison Park today and will take up the manager role full-time on Sunday.

Just seen shots from outside Goodison and there are a lot of fans frantically scrolling on their mobile phones. Big news.

  11. 'Arteta to Arsenal is 20 years in the making'published at 11:15 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

    Guillem Balague
    Spanish football journalist

Mikel Arteta has been appointed Arsenal's new manager and, while he may appear something of a novice to many, those who know him well say it is a moment he started preparing for more than 20 years ago.

Even in his early playing days at Barcelona's academy, in 1997, he was showing the kind of leadership skills which made him a distinctive figure. He has left his mark everywhere he has been since then, not merely as a player but also as a major influence on the team, both on and off the pitch.

Such is the regard in which he is held at Manchester City, there has long been an understanding that it was only ever going to be a matter of time before their assistant manager found himself being offered the top job at another major club. He has rejected the possibility of leading Newcastle and Lyon in recent months as they did not feel right at the time.

  12. Back home (no the other one)published at 11:12 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

    Everton v Arsenal (12:30 GMT)

"He knows the club" klaxon 2!

Arteta also used to play for Everton (they are the club Arsenal signed him from), so he also knows that club.

In fact, he was at Everton longer than Arsenal, so he actually knows the Toffees better. So by the 'he knows the club' logic he'd have been a better Everton manager than an Arsenal one. Is that how it works? I don't know.

At least nobody will need to tell where the car park is today.

  13. 'A dream for me'published at 11:06 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

    Everton v Arsenal (12:30 GMT)

    "He knows the club" klaxon!

Yep, it's another former player returning to a club to manage. Mikel Arteta joins Frank Lampard, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and today's opposite number Duncan Ferguson as recent men to have taken on managerial duties at a side they used to play for.

Barring the feelgood factor amongst fans, I'm not entirely sure what him knowing the club is actually worth, but there you go. I'm sure some people will go out of their way to tell me.

At least nobody will need to tell him where the car park is.

What Arteta has done is make a lot of the right noises though...

  14. Arteta! Ancelotti?published at 11:03 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

    Everton v Arsenal (12:30 GMT)

Arsenal made their move this week, appointing former player Mikel Arteta as successor to Unai Emery. Bold move too. They snatched the Spaniard from his coaching role at Man City and are willing to hand over control of what is a huge club to a rookie.

Everton are still yet to take the plunge for Marco Silva's replacement, but all the smart money is on Italian former Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti being their preferred man.

And wouldn't just know it, they're playing each other at lunchtime.

  15. A Christmas Carolpublished at 10:58 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019
