Nike Bob Beard: By all accounts, Everton-Arsenal a turgid affair. So many Premier League games going that way. How long can it hold on to best league in world title? Championship beats it surely?

Bob Moss: This is the perfect argument for giving teams 0 points for 0-0 draws.

NorthFive: This is an incredibly young Arsenal team here and frankly holding our own, away from home against an Everton team who have had a bounce under Ferguson. Perspective!

Adrian Li: This Arsenal team is giving the phrase 'boring boring Arsenal' a new more literal meaning.

  5. 'A disappointing half of football'published at 13:25 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

    Everton 0-0 Arsenal

    Andy Reid
Ex-Nottingham Forest and Tottenham midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

When they got into the final third there was so little quality - it was real schoolboy stuff. A really disappointing half of football.

There's a lot of work for both managers to do, especially Arteta at Arsenal, because there's absolutely no intensity to their play at all and Aubameyang is so isolated up top.

  6. 'What was that?'published at 13:24 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

I've never known a half-time whistle blow and there just be nothing.

    No cheers.

    No boos.

    Nothing. What was that?

Ah, the sweet mercy of the referee's whistle.

    That was awful.

  8. 'Decent effort'published at 13:17 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

    Everton 0-0 Arsenal

    Andy Reid
Ex-Nottingham Forest and Tottenham midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

That was a decent effort by Gabriel Martinelli. He got a lot of power behind it but he probably should have got it on target.

That ball by Lucas Torreira to find him was the best bit of quality we've seen all day.

Urgh. Richarlison drops to his haunches and throws up his breakfast.

    I know how he feels.

Matt Nevard: Off to paint a wall and watch it dry. Far more exciting than this.

Joss Trennard: This might be the worst game of football I’ve ever watched.

    Chance. A good one too.

Gabriel Martinelli is released into the clear down the left, but after getting himself into a shooting position, he slices his effort wide.

The referee returns to book Tom Davies, who clattered Lucas Torreira in the build-up.

    Everton 0-0 Arsenal

Everton look to end the half in a positive fashion. The ball to Tom Davies in the box is a good one and his cross is fiercely struck into the mixer. It is too fierce, though, and Cenk Tosun can only steer the ball off target.

  13. Everton fans demand urgencypublished at 13:12 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Goodison Park

There is a mood of goodwill around Goodison Park as Everton's new manager Carlo Ancelotti watches on - but the home supporters are now starting to demand a little more urgency from their team.

Arsenal's new manager Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, will be happy his team are under so little serious pressure.

Amrul Choudhury: Ancelotti may want to check clause of his contract. Still time to bail... Awful so far.

Noel Fitzpatrick: Both teams playing like they had their Christmas Party last night!

Everton work so hard to win the ball back in Arsenal territory, but then show criminal levels of wastefulness when they have it, as Sidibe's cross goes tamely out of play.

Big Gray: Mikel Arteta needs a degree in excellence to improve this Arsenal side. Serious lack of quality.

Ideozu-Frank Sampson: Can comfortably say here that Duncan Ferguson has done a great job by steadying the ship at Everton! Great bloke he is!

  19. Postpublished at 37 mins

    Everton 0-0 Arsenal

Everton have a chance to break, which Richarlison does down the left. But he has to delay his driving run due to a lack of team-mates.

His eventual ball across the pitch to Tom Davies strips the whole move of momentum and Arsenal are back in numbers to clear.

There is a sense that very little of this game is by design. It is two teams digging in and hoping to make something happen, rather than having a clear-cut strategy of how to do that.
