Jota is better than that. He should have done a lot better. Kudos to Sanches, though. He's looked great in this tournament.

Shows you what a good season with a title-winning side can do.

First chance! And a big one.

It's Portugal on the charge and Renato Sanches picks out Diogo Jota, who has time to take a touch in the box before pulling his angled shot wide of the far post.

It's all very patient in these opening stages. Two heavyweights, testing each other with some mid-ring circling and the odd jab.

Belgium will take their time. There's so much respect you can see on the pitch. They are very fearful of each other in a way. It needs an early goal.

Will Lawless: understand the majority expect Belgium to progress. However CR7 can turn it on when he needs to, come on Portugal!

Callum: What a game this should be!

    Belgium 0-0 Portugal

Really is crazy just how many of the big sides there are on one side of the draw. Whoever comes through to reach the final is really going to have earned it.

The rivalry is massive because there are so many talented footballers on show. The fans are pumped up for it and I've got to say if it was judged on singing and commitment on the national anthem Portugal would go 1-0 up.

    Belgium 0-0 Portugal

Belgium on the front foot early on. For a moment, Kevin de Bruyne weighs up his options - including a shot from range - but instead keeps a patient, passing move alive.

    It ultimately fizzles out.

Italy are the opponents awaiting the winner tonight. Doesn't get any easier for either.

One thing we're surely going to get tonight is goals (oh great, well done, you've only gone and guaranteed 0-0 now).

There's Cristiano Ronaldo on one side and then there's this little fact about the current Belgium team...

The Red Devils have only failed to score in two of their last 58 games under Roberto Martinez.

Not bad. Not bad at all.

  12. KICK-OFFpublished at 20:00 British Summer Time 27 June 2021

    Belgium 0-0 Portugal

Recent history favours Portugal, who are unbeaten in their past five matches against Belgium across all competitions (W3 D2) since a 3-0 defeat in World Cup qualifying in September 1989.

However, this is the first meeting between the two at a major tournament.

And it's under way, after both teams take a knee.

To a man, the Belgium team all look the same way. Not a word leaves Kevin de Bruyne's mouth. Focused.

Little Eden Hazard looks like a mascot next to Thibaut Courtois.

Solid anthem work from Portugal. Just because he can, Ronaldo looks a different way to everyone else. But he's not showing off.

Portugal need to get in behind that back three if they are to win but even with CR7s pace he's not known for that. I think Belgium win 3-1 but praying for a miracle. Come on Portugal!!

Right then, let's get the show on the road. The players are on their way out to the pitch. We'll have a couple on anthems and then potentially one of the games of the tournament. Ready?

  17. 'The Portuguese people expect nothing'published at 19:51 British Summer Time 27 June 2021

    Belgium v Portugal (20:00 BST)

    Carlos Carvalhal
Former Sheff Wed and Swansea manager on BBC Radio 5 live

It is not just about football. It's about mentality. We saw that when we played against Germany, the people in the country said we are bad, we had no chances, we won't go to the next phase and we go home. 99% of the people was talking like that. We have a big chance to win the Euros. The Portuguese people like to be like that.

They can do something magic, they can do something special when the people expect nothing. Nobody expected anything when we won Euro 2016. In this moment it's the same. Nobody in Portugal trusts us, everyone says Belgium are better. We like to be like that.

  18. 'If Belgium don't win this tournament there is something wrong'published at 19:50 British Summer Time 27 June 2021

    Belgium v Portugal (20:00 BST)

    Chris Waddle
Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

I look at their team on paper and if they don't win this tournament there is something wrong. The back three is aging and lack pace, Witsel's a good player, Tielemens has had a good season. You could go through the whole team. And you've got De Bruyne and Hazard coming back to full fitness. Lukaku has been scoring for fun in Italy and scoring in this tournament. So if I was any other team in this tournament, I wouldn't want to play Belgium.

  19. 'Belgium second favourites'published at 19:49 British Summer Time 27 June 2021

    Belgium v Portugal (20:00 BST)

    Simon Gleave
Head of sports analysis, Nielsen's Gracenote

Belgium are the top-ranked club in Europe according to Gracenote's World Ranking, ahead of France, Italy and Portugal.

Progress to the last 16 has increased Belgium's chance of winning the tournament from 14.1% to 15% but they are now second favourites due to being in the tougher half of the draw.

Portugal have been unlucky with the draw in this tournament, firstly ending up in Group F with France and Germany, and now having to face Belgium in the last 16.

Portugal's Gracenote World Football Ranking of fourth in Europe implies that they are capable of a semi-final place but they first have to knock out a team who are theoretically better than them.

  20. Lawro's predictionpublished at 19:47 British Summer Time 27 June 2021

    Belgium v Portugal (20:00 BST)

    Mark Lawrenson
    BBC football expert

Wow. This is a great tie - the top-ranked team in the world, against the holders.

Both sides have got plenty of match-winners, capable of a moment of genius. I'd argue Belgium have the edge going forward but their defence has got mistakes in them.

It is very difficult to call, and I think this will be settled by a penalty shoot-out.

Lawro's prediction: 1-1 after extra time - Portugal to win on penalties.
