Harry Maguire has a word with the ref. He is not happy at some contact Thomas Muller made after the tackle.

First sign of a bit of needle.

It is the first time we see Raheem Sterling, he drops deep, comes 30 yards from goal and bends it for that far post.

Neuer as a top-class keeper gets across and pushes it away for a corner.

England manager Gareth Southgate has been in deep discussion with his assistant Steve Hoilland and coach Graeme Jones - presumably discussing the way Germany have already taken control of the central midfield area.

Love that from Raheem Sterling. Such an intelligent position that he picks up centrally. He knows exactly what he wants to do when he gets on that right foot and he tests Manuel Neuer with a strike towards that far corner. He gets two hands to it Neuer and tips it round the far post.

Oh, good effort! Now we're talking.

England threaten as Raheem Sterling cuts inside and draws a good save from Manuel Neuer with a shot from range.

Soon after, Harry Maguire is first to a cross in the box but can only send his header straight at the German keeper.

    England 0-0 Germany

    Micah Richards
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Germany have been outstanding. I mentioned before the game win your first tackles and England have not done any of that and Germany have grown in stature.

England look nervous, they need settle down, relax and play what they know how to do.

Germany have had 63% possession in these early stages and have completed almost twice as many passes (71 to 41) than England.

They are pressing high and England are finding it difficult to get out.

Harry Maguire meets the free-kick delivery, but his header back into the mixer is headed away by a German defender.

Much more promising for England, though.

Bukayo Saka raises the volume, winning a free-kick deep in Germany territory by turning Antonio Rudiger and getting taken out.

Clumsy. We all know he has that in his locker. Saka too.

Germany have started this game magnificently, they are so relaxed, they are all comfortable in possession. England cannot get near them.

We're just a little bit edgy at the minute. We just need to settle down a bit. Look at where their wing-backs are. They get into great positions. We're playing with a back five now essentially because of how high they play. That's exactly what we need to do when we get the ball. Be brave, and press their wing-backs back as much as possible.

    Phil McNulty

It's England who are being pushed back by a very confident Germany opening phase. Already one or two anxious moments.

England need to get on the ball and keep it. They have not done that so far.
