England fans have packed out London's Leicester Square as excitement builds ahead of their team's Euro 2020 final against Italy.

And supporters began arriving at Wembley hours before the eagerly anticipated 20:00 BST kick-off at the stadium, which will host 60,000 fans later.

Long queues have been forming outside pubs which will be allowed to stay open an extra 45 minutes in case of extra time and penalties

While thousands of schoolchildren will be allowed to arrive later on Monday so they can stay up to watch the final.

Fans have also gathered in central London to attend an impromptu gig by The Lightning Seeds, who will be reunited with comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner to perform the Three Lions football anthem.

We've got more photos from the build up here.

The anthemic sounds of Three Lions roaring across England today have a special place in Elisabetta Zamboni's heart.

Half-Italian and half-Brazilian, she was 23 and pregnant when she moved to the UK while the Euro 96 tournament was in full swing.

"The funny thing is that nowadays I can understand what they are singing about but back in 1996 I couldn't understand much of the song," the 48-year-old says.

"It didn't stop me absolutely loving it though, it's a really, really beautiful and meaningful song.

"It reminds me of how well England was doing then and also it reminds me of my pregnancy."

A quarter of a century ago Elisabetta relocated to be with her English partner but she is now a British citizen and settled in Sunderland, where she works as a translator.

The mum of two will be watching the final with her 24-year-old son, Andrew Gray.

She says "I love both teams. If Italy wins I am going to rejoice, if England wins I am going to rejoice."

Haven't the England players all agreed to replicate Phil Foden's haircut if they win the Euros.

    That'll be some sight.

  6. The 'Foden' - for free!published at 14:16 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

A barber who cut Gareth Southgate's hair during the 2018 World Cup has been offering free England haircuts to customers ahead of the final.

Simon Townley, from Lancashire, posted the offer on Facebook after "a few drinks" following England's semi-final win and woke to dozens of messages - mainly from people wanting to imitate Phil Foden's tribute to Paul Gascoigne.

The 35-year-old said: "The kids in my town of Burnley are loving it."

He said people were "queuing" for the free cuts' offer, which lasted until Saturday afternoon, adding he was "happy to be part of it".

    Fred RhodesImage source, Johanna Sturdy

Fred Rhodes will be watching tonight's game at home in Halesowen in the West Midlands - but he was at Wembley for the World Cup Final in 1966 and says it was "an experience you’d never ever forget".

"The sight that greeted you – the lush green grass, the panorama of the crowd. The atmosphere was fantastic. It just got better through the day," he says.

“There was a group of German supporters in front of us. They were very jolly and amiable. They were even waving flags at the end. It was remarkable.

“We were stood behind the England goal. Gordon Banks was in goal. There was a melee of players outside the box, and then we saw him go down and the ball slid underneath him and hit the back of the net. My heart sank into my boots.

“The game was nip and tuck until the end. The euphoria at the end was unbelievable. Nobby Stiles, he was a character, his little dance. We all went home on a cloud.

“For an England supporter, you’ll never forget it.”

But he says tonight's game against Italy "will be a different matter, very competitive".

He says: "I wish I could see a clear result, but I don’t think I can.

“If they play to their potential, they’ll give them a good game. The Italian side haven’t lost for so long. But they haven’t been completely safe, they’ve had their flaws. Spain, they went to penalties.”

His prediction is “2-1, to England. If things go well.”

Mohammed Patel has sent us an update from his pit stop at Watford Gap services on his four hour drive from Preston to Wembley.

He got tickets through the England supporters club and is going to the match with my brothers and some mates.

He says: "I am so excited to be watching us in the final. I've travelled all over Europe supporting England, watched a lot of games, watched us lose, watched us win but this is the best football I will ever watch.

"I have supported England for years, but I'm used to seeing my local team play more, so seeing a team like this that gel together so well and play well together is so exciting.

"I watched the Denmark game the other day, but this is the final. It's once in a lifetime, it hasn't happened in my lifetime before, and I cannot believe I get to go.

"I am most looking forward to going with my family and friends and feeling the atmosphere and watching it all happen."

  16. School pupils spell it outpublished at 13:51 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    Italy v England (20:00 BST)

At South Farnborough Junior School in Hampshire, 375 pupils and one teacher spelled out 'It's coming home' on the field for a drone photo.

School business manager, Zoe Plummer, says: “We marked the words out on the field, socially distanced of course and then each ‘class bubble’ formed a letter. One of our teachers made the apostrophe - we’ve renamed her Miss Apostrophe Ellis!

“We had Three Lions and Sweet Caroline playing on the PA system.

“It was an amazing atmosphere and made even more special as it’s the first time since March 2020 that the whole school had been able to do something ‘together’.

    “They absolutely loved it!”

'WOW'. England beat Germany in a knockout tie for the first time since a certain game in 1966. Yes, just remind yourself of that and how sweet it must've been for Gareth Southgate by watching the stream of the game at the top of the page.

The England boss missed his spot-kick in the penalty shoot-out defeat against Germany in a Euro 96 semi-final and had now masterminded their exit from Euro 2020. Sweet Caroline... (I can't even write 'sweet' now without singing THAT song).

    Matt Upson
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

So, is this the biggest sporting even of our lifetime? A decent debate and Matt Upson thinks so.

"I would say so. If you take a step back for a moment and you look at the history, the magnitude of what this game is, what it means to everyone after the last 18 months.

"For this tournament to arrive at the moment at Wembley with England in the final, it's like everything's come together in one moment.

"It's huge, there's no bigger sporting occasion in this country for me for many many years."
