dax fullbrook: You’d rather lose week in week out, but playing fancy football, rather than winning?? what a ridiculous statement.

Andrew Phillpot: We've been playing flamboyant football and losing for 5 years, what are you talking about

Anon: Speaking as another spurs fan , I would rather win any trophy than play with flamboyance, we've played like that for years and won nothing. This club needs to win something soon.

GG: Judge Jose when Harry's back & firing in the goals. In the meantime we just have to get the wins, even if the performances are ugly.

Jose a class act. Makes his teams difficult to beat, turning Spurs into a tougher unit, winning is the game.

  7. 'We must use our chances'published at 22:11 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2020

    FT: Spurs 3-2 Southampton

    Southampton

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl speaking to BT Sport: “It’s nice for Jose to say we were the best team but we have lost a good player tonight so we can only hope [James Ward-Prowse] is not that long injured.

“It’s not enough to dominate, we must use our chances and I think this is something we must learn. We gave it away to easy. In the end we defended not like we did before and they showed the quality in that moment and they end up scoring the goal and winning the game.

“It’s only about winning or losing in the cup. We must be quick to learn the behaviours of getting a result back so I’m not happy today.”

On Tottenham’s penalty decision: “I haven’t seen the penalty decision so I don’t know.”

  8. 'It is not about being the better team in the FA Cup'published at 22:08 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2020

    FT Spurs 3-2 Southampton

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl, speaking to BBC Sport: "The last 15 minutes we didn't defend like we had to. It doesn't count, we had 30 minutes of the second half perfect.

"We were not defending like we wanted to for the second goal and the third goal was too easy, they ran through our midfield like there was nobody.

"In the FA Cup it is not about being the better team, it is a game of results and he [Jose Mourinho] got the result and we didn't. After a very busy period we now have time to recover."

On James Ward-Prowse's injury: "I think it is not that bad, I think it is only a cut on the knee. That is a positive message for me."

More from Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho, speaking to BBC Sport about what prompted the improved performance late on: "I want to say it was the players' soul. That is what I think, the spirit of the team, their friendship, the links we are building, really strong.

"We couldn't start the game with Dele Alli. We touched the team in the right moment. The second goal was like an attack to the pride of the team and they gave everything."

Priority now to win the FA Cup? "The priority is to survive. We have lots of difficulties. I am not speaking just about Harry Kane, I am speaking about Giovani lo Celso, Erik Lamela - in this moment they could give us the balance. Today was a team completely unbalanced. Really, really hard to organise it and really, really hard to win the match."

On Jan Vertonghen's substitution: "I understand his sadness, it is normal. He is always respectful and always professional. It doesn't make me happy to make a substitution. I did it for the team, Jan is happy for the team."

  10. 'Trying to build puzzle with a few pieces short'published at 22:02 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2020

    FT: Spurs 3-2 Southampton

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho speaking to BT Sport: "I have to be honest and say I think the best team lost on the pitch but my team were the ones with more heart and went to their limit.

"So many difficulties to even build a team, the options were not options to change the game. My team to deserved to win – but the best team lost.

"From the intensity level and freshness, they were much stronger than us. We tried to organise the team with the players available. They controlled us well. Dele changed the game after we switched to a back four.

"We had a link with Dele Alli, it was like trying to build a puzzle with a few pieces short."

On playing Norwich in the fifth round: "To arrive here we had to play four matches, really difficult. We also played Norwich at home a couple of weeks ago and it was difficult.

"Let’s see a bit of potential for that game and to recover from injuries. After such a game against Manchester City, it was very hard. Dele could suffer pain and could cope with that tonight. We gave everything we could so that’s why I’m so proud of my team.”

On Jan Vertonghen’s substitution: “It’s hard to sub players during the game. We were not controlling the game in a back five so had to change and he was the one to come out, that’s football. Some players react in a negative way but Jan acted like the professional that he is.”

  11. 'The best team lost but we played to our limits'published at 22:01 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2020

    Spurs 3-2 Southampton

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho, speaking to BBC Sport: "My team performance was in the limits. It was in the limits for me with players available and not available. It was in the limits for them because two days ago they played such an incredible match.

"We suffered. We played against a very good team, we played against a team that was the best team on the pitch but we deserved to win because we were in our limits. They had their best players, they had one more day rest, they were fresh.

"I think I did very well because I had to manage a team with so many difficulties. I changed from the back five to the back four in the moment when I could. Then Dele Alli became the link.

"The players [played with their] souls, and heart and gave absolutely everything. Four matches over two rounds, really hard for the boys. They deserve this happiness."

Graham Green: Given their schedule for the remaining 13 games, Southampton could still be challenging for a European spot in May if they keep playing the way they have today and on Saturday against Liverpool.

The Saints have been great tonight but the old defensive frailties have surfaced at the wrong time.

Mangoe: "How are Southampton losing this?" Because this is Mourinho's Tottenham. He's the tactical master who makes great teams look second best for 90 minutes, and still comes away victorious. Speaking as a Spurs fan, I'd rather lose with flamboyance than win this way...

Spurs midfielder Dele Alli, whose introduction changed the game, on BT Sport: "It says a lot about the character we have. To go from such a big game at the weekend, easy to lose a game like this.

"We showed great character, at times a bit sloppy, but sometimes it takes one little switch and I think it was their second goal.

"It has been a long time coming, we are one of the best teams in the world in the years we have been together, we deserve a trophy. But no-one is going to give it to us, we have to keep pushing and not just for us but for the fans we have to win something."
