    How did he stop this!?

It's a brilliant save from David Seaman and his ponytail. Mauricio Pochettino thinks he's equalised with a header from close range on the corner.

Seaman reacts to get down low and keep it out on the line! Teddy Sheringham then frantically nods it away for another corner. Phew!

Ooooh, decent header from Terry Sheringham, who had just drifted away at the back post.

    He's getting chances!

Argentina go up the other end but Sol Campbell gets an important block in.

    Naughty from Mauricio Pochettino.

He wipes out Ashley Cole. Are you a Tottenham fan or something Mauricio? No mercy there for the Arsenal defender.

    Argentina 0-1 England

Lovely stuff from Argentina. They have just started to pass it around a bit more now. A few flicks, one-twos and quick turns open it up for substitute Pablo Aimar.

He ends up blasting it way over the bar.

Juan Pablo Sorin was waiting for the cut-back as Argentina attack down the left but David Seaman is alert.

He releases it quickly down the pitch and Trevor Sinclair makes good distance. He has Michael Owen in support in the middle but he cuts inside and has a go himself.

It's saved at the near post. Decent run!

    Not a chance.

  12. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 64 mins

The final change from Marcelo Bielsa. On comes Claudio Lopez. It's Kily Gonzalez who goes off. He's been a little quieter in this second half.

Brilliant from Nicky Butt. He tracks back, sticks a toe in to win the ball off Kily Gonzalez and then David Beckham is fouled.

  14. England missing key figurespublished at 16:34 British Summer Time 3 May 2020

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

England's morale really building by the time they faced Argentina, moving away from the humidity and heat of their base at Iwaji Island, 45 minutes from the sprawling city of Kobe, to the much cooler climes of Sapporo.

Eriksson was missing two key figures in Japan, with Gary Neville and Steven Gerrard ruled out of the tournament through injury, but there was enough quality around that meant this was a squad heavy on optimism with players like Danny Mills and Nicky Butt relishing the chance to step in.

The atmosphere inside the stadium was on a knife-edge at this point.

It was a fixture with plenty of World Cup history, stretching back as far as 1966 when England won an infamous quarter-final and the Argentina captain Antonio Rattin was sent off at Wembley.

Great work from Ashley Cole on the left. He hassles Argentina's defenders and wins the ball back for England.

Teddy Sheringham tries to feed Trevor Sinclair in quickly but he's offside.

  16. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 59 mins

Here's the change from Argentina. It's Gabriel Batistuta who goes off. On comes Lazio forward Hernan Crespo in a straight swap. Plenty of threat.

He's bagged one in every two games for the national side...

  19. CLOSE!published at 57 mins

    Argentina 0-1 England

OH! This would have been something else!

It's fantastic from England - the passing and the movement in the build-up is just lovely to watch.

It finally comes over to Teddy Sheringham in the box and he just smashes it sweetly on the volley. He couldn't have hit it any better but it's straight at the keeper. Anywhere else and that was in! Probably his first touch too?

    Media caption,
