    Martin O'Neill

Sven Goran Eriksson has got it absolutely spot on. The two wide midfielders - David Beckham and Trevor Sinclair - are playing more inside. Under pressure they have a line of four which is very tight together. They have just taken it on from there and been magnificent.

Well, well, well. David Beckham put away the penalty won by Michael Owen to give England this narrow half-time lead. This would be HUGE if England can hold on.

Mauricio Pochettino needs to be careful too - he's been putting in a few late tackles and has lacked discipline. Doesn't seem like the type of man with the temperament to go into management, that's for sure.

Dean Kempster: England look alot better with Hagreaves off and Scholes in the middle next to Butt. Surely can't carry on with him out wide in future games.

Lots of protesting from Mauricio Pochettino but it's no use, you could see he tripped Michael Owen. It wasn't much but it was enough to bring him down.

It was all very 'spursy' from the Argentine defender.

  16. Butt key to England successpublished at 16:02 British Summer Time 3 May 2020

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Nicky Butt was an unsung hero of Manchester United's successes and was regarded in the same way when he played for England - but not by those he played with and who watched him at close quarters.

Those of us lucky enoughh to get a view of Butt in training saw a player of superb technique and influence and he was a key figure in England's 2002 World Cup campaign.

One man who shared that view was Brazil legend Pele, who captured headlines in Japan when he insisted Butt was England's most important player.

He said: "The player I like is Butt. He's been the best player up to this point. He's a tremendous midfielder. He's a good marker, he's passionate, he gets forward and he passes well."
