No surprises in that team line-up from Sven. It's being reported that Joe Cole picked up a groin injury in training.

Leaves us a little sparse in midfield. That left side has been a real problem too. Looks like Paul Scholes is having to take one for the team again.

  3. Sapporo's super dome a rare experiencepublished at 14:54 British Summer Time 3 May 2020

    Argentina v England

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

A hovering pitch and giant air conditioners - life was certainly different for those of us working inside the Sapporo Dome in Japan as England met Argentina.

Sven-Goran Eriksson was very vocal in his belief this sort of stadium represented the future of football, speaking after the voices of England's players had echoed eerily around the stadium in training under the giant dome.

This was a new Japanese landmark and all needs are catered for. Tourists could even get fantastic views across the city from an observation tower.

I've got caught up in it all. There's a nervous tension in the whole place! It's hard not to be excited as a neutral. You have the English nation depending on it. It's big!

  6. Here's the permutations...published at 14:52 British Summer Time 3 May 2020

    Argentina v England

    If England win:

    • Draw against Nigeria will put England through.

    If England draw:

    • A win by two goals against Nigeria will put England through. A one-goal win could be enough if there is a victory for either Sweden or Argentina.

    If England lose:

    • They must beat Nigeria and hope Argentina beat Sweden. It would then come down to goal difference.
  7. 'Tingling with anticipation'published at 14:50 British Summer Time 3 May 2020

    Argentina v England

    Alan Hansen
Former Scotland and Liverpool defender on BBC TV

I'm tingling with anticipation. I just cannot wait for the game to start! I'm feeling positive. The eleven players that go on to the pitch in an England jersey have got to play to the highest level.

  9. Team news - Butt in for Vassellpublished at 14:47 British Summer Time 3 May 2020

    Argentina v England

Argentina boss Marcelo Bielsa named his team a day early - giving the TV team plenty of time to sort out the team news graphics.

Gabriel Batistuta gets the nod up front ahead of Hernan Crespo again, while there is just one change - Kily Gonzalez replaces Claudio Lopez.

Manchester United midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron will captain the side.

Argentina XI: Pablo Cavallero, Mauricio Pochettino, Walter Samuel, Diego Placente, Javier Zanetti, Diego Simeone, Juan Sebastian Veron, Juan Pablo Sorin, Ariel Ortega, Gabriel Batistuta, Kily Gonzalez

It's the usual 4-4-2 formation from Sven Goran Eriksson with no real surprises to the starting line-up.

There's just one change from the disappointing draw with Sweden. Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt comes in for striker Darius Vassell.

The experienced Teddy Sheringham has to settle for a place on the bench again, while Joe Cole has picked up a groin injury and isn't in the squad.

England XI: David Seaman, Danny Mills, Ashley Cole, Rio Ferdinand, Sol Campbell, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, Owen Hargreaves, Michael Owen, Emile Heskey
