Exeter will be represented in the stands tonight by 1,748 ‘cut out’ fans' faces. Among them will be that of Exeter-born Coldplay front man Chris Martin, who is probably the Grecians' most famous supporter.

In different circumstances, tonight Wembley was supposed to be just over a week away from hosting the semi-finals of Euro 2020 and then the final not long afterwards, having already staged a last-16 tie and all three of England's group-stage matches this summer.

Packed, international crowds would have flocked to the home of football repeatedly throughout the summer. Alas, as we all know, crowds are not allowed in this strange summer of 2020.

But our national stadium is still going to be pretty busy over the next few weeks - with more play-off finals on the way, plus plenty of FA Cup drama to come, albeit all of it behind closed doors.

You'll have to excuse us for repeating this fact, but you'd scarcely believe a cup final was taking place inside Wembley Stadium tonight.

Less than 90 minutes prior to kick-off it's pretty quiet...

It goes without saying that play-off finals are one of those 'must-be-there' events for supporters of English Football League clubs - whether you're a week in, week out season ticket holder or just an occasional follower.

It's difficult to imagine, then, what this evening will be like for the fans of Exeter City and Northampton Town, forced to watch from afar as their teams do battle at Wembley.

But... perhaps you actually don't have to imagine all that hard.

The Cobblers, who produced a stirring comeback to beat Cheltenham over two legs in their semi-final, have already surveyed the scene.

For two teams, tonight is THE night. The play-off final. Winner takes all. No second chances. One moment of magic. One win from the glory of promotion.

There'll be none of the usual cacophony of noise, colour and passion ringing around the stands though, because tonight we will see a very different-looking Wembley final.

This evening we are all set for what's thought to be the first-ever competitive game played at Wembley behind closed doors.

But that doesn't mean we aren't ready for plenty of drama!
