  2. 'Curtis deserves the goal'published at 19:15 British Summer Time 5 July 2020

    Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa

    Liverpool

More from Klopp on Curtis Jones: "What Curtis has is he's in these positions. There's no lack of confidence. He wants to be there, he wants to be decisive and that's really good, he deserves the goal and the appearance and I'm really happy for him."

On chasing points record: "The only thing I can say is there's no chance to win records if you constantly think about records.

"We don't want a record we want the three points. We don't think about these things, three points is difficult enough. Today Aston Villa was fighting with all they had and it makes life uncomfortable. I like it, it was not a brilliant performance but it was a good performance that gets us three points."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking to Sky Sports: "A very difficult game for different reasons. Villa are obviously organised and made it tricky for us. The wind made it tricky for both but it was really hard to play normal football.

"We had to stay on track and do the right things and in the second half we had more of the good moments. You could see we needed time to get used to it. Two situations could have been penalties, we were unlucky but I'm fine - we are where we are because we win difficult games."

  5. 'We must keep our belief'published at 19:01 British Summer Time 5 July 2020

    Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith: "I'm disappointed. I don't want to be a valiant loser, we're scrapping for points. To out-shoot Liverpool at home at Anfield, in terms of efforts on goal, it's excellent - but need to take our opportunities. We never found the quality in the final third they did.

"Was it the best time to come to Anfield? Jurgen Klopp teams don't take their foot off the gas, I don't thank him [Klopp] for bringing the three subs on, that strengthened them but we were in the game the whole way through. Unfortunately they beat our press with their quality in the end.

"It's a tough task but we're still in it that's for sure. Our performances since the restart haven't got the results they deserved. We have got to make the most of our chances. We need to keep the belief in the dressing room, it's some achievement to come here and play as we did but we have to maintain the belief. I thought we more than matched them."

In contrast, Aston Villa have failed to keep a clean sheet in each of their last 24 Premier League away games, since a 0-0 draw with West Brom in January 2016. It’s their longest such run in the top-flight since September 1989 (38 games).

Villa are also without a victory in nine Premier League games (D2 L7), the longest current winless run in the competition.

So, Liverpool have now won each of their last 34 Premier League matches when scoring the first goal of the game, since a 1-1 draw with West Ham United in February 2019.

Fabien Riley: Not sure why everyone is so surprised. This is how Liverpool have played all season, lockdown made everyone forget they've been scraping results all year?

Ed O'Toole: that was the type of win that has been the hallmark of Liverpool’s season. Gritty, Determined , and doing enough to get over the line. Champions need that quality, as well as the scintillating stuff too.

  10. 'We can think about records later'published at 18:38 British Summer Time 5 July 2020

    Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa

    Liverpool

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane speaking to Sky Sports: "We pushed as a team until the end and created some chances. It wasn't an easy game but at least we deserved these three points.

"I think sometimes you can't expect always to score five or four against a good opponent. They were really organised and we were playing patiently until the gaps opened and we scored the two goals.

"For us right now it is most important to win games, then you can think about records.

"We have important games and we will try to play game by game. It won't be easy but that is the Premier League - it is always difficult."

That defeat leaves Villa 18th, a point and a place behind Watford.

West Ham's draw at Newcastle leaves them four points ahead of Dean Smith's side. Not a huge gap but enough to ease the panic.

It is starting to look like potentially three from four at the bottom.

That game between West Ham and Villa on the last day could still turn out to be a belter.

I feel Villa are doomed. Not necessarily because they are the worst team near the bottom but looking at the fixtures there are too many teams around them playing each other over the coming weeks.

    Paul E.

Curtis Jones should start ahead of Oxlade-Chamberlain and Nabi Keita. He has the air of a top Premier League player about him.

Villa will be gutted, after putting such a huge amount into the game. They gave as good as they got for the vast majority of it, but in the end a couple of moments of class were the difference.

Mane and Jones give Liverpool a win in their first game at Anfield since being crowned champions. That is 17 wins out of 17 games as home this season.

Scott: Aston Villa are so ordinary and it's sad to see. Nothing up front, generally useless at the back (not too bad today tbf). A recipe for relegation.

    Oh save, Alisson.

Jack Grealish is in down the left and looking to give Villa a slim lifeline, but the Reds keeper gets down to stick a hand out and prevent the low finish finding the bottom corner.
