Big moment for the young man!

Just minutes after coming on and in just his third Premier League appearance, Curtis Jones scores his first top-flight goal. It is a fine finish too, coming after Mo Salah nods the ball back to him in the area from the back post.

    It is also game over.

Looking at the 3 games this weekend I'd say Watford seem the far weaker of Villa, Bournemouth and them. I wouldn't be surprised in a twist of fate if the three teams promoted together in 2015 (Watford, Norwich and Bournemouth) all went down this season now.

Jones' first involvement in the game is to lash a shot well over the bar from range.

  4. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 84 mins

Another throw of the dice for Villa. Indiana Vassilev on for Trezeguet.

Kris Jefferson: Paul in Shrewsbury, what a ridiculous statement, marginal?! They’ve literally got one of the biggest margins at the top of the prem ever, yeah they’ve not really turned up today, but they’re still winning

    Liverpool 1-0 Aston Villa

Another Reds change sees Keita depart and Curtis Jones replace him.

    Liverpool 1-0 Aston Villa

Villa are not going down without a fight. Jota earns his side a corner as his cross is deflected behind.

Much to Dean Smith's frustration, though, they take it short and then pass the ball into empty space, allowing Liverpool to reclaim possession.

Mikey: Henderson and Firmino are vital to this side. Proven by the substitutions made. Irreplaceable.

Mings is back up. He is limping but is going to crack on regardless.

Sadly what makes Liverpool from a average team compared to title winners is marginal and that has to be a concern for Klopp. Oxlade-Chamberlain and Origi just don't have that cutting edge that sets the team from the rest.

Tyrone Mings isn't happy. He's down on all fours and clearly hurt. Looks like he fell awkwardly following a challenge with Henderson. This would just rub salt into the wound for Villa.

Jon Evans: Villa's season in a nutshell right there. Same every week.

Ash Williams: Nothing Reina could do about that. Villa defended really well but all Liverpool needed was one decent chance.

Oh, almost 2-0. Roberto Firmino is teed up and looks to curl a shot into the top corner but it is just a fraction too close to Pepe Reina, who claws the ball away.

  15. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 74 mins

    Liverpool 1-0 Aston Villa

Now what have Villa got? The goal is a real hammer blow.

They start by sending on Jota and Mbwana Samatta for Keinan Davis and El Ghazi.

Salah wants a penalty again. And again he won't get one. He drops after feeling Hause's arm on his shoulder but the referee waves away his appeals.

    Sadio Mane

That one moment of class and incision. All Villa's fine work is undone by a neat pass from Naby Keita into the box and a rising finish from Mane that cannons off the underside of the bar and finds the net.

The Reds have not been great, but when you have great players you don't always have to be.

The second drinks break of the game. Dean Smith looks pretty relaxed.

  19. Postpublished at 66 mins

    Liverpool 0-0 Aston Villa

I would ordinarily say that it is now 25 minutes for Villa to hold on. There remains some truth to this. But the way it has gone they might just fancy their chances of nicking more than a point.

The visitors look dangerous on the break too. They have four on three with Grealish the man in possession on the edge of the box. He ignores his colleagues, cuts inside and looks for the shot but his effort is blocked by Van Dijk.

That was a waste of a great position.
