We should praise Villa, defensively they've been very good as you'd expect from a Dean Smith side.

They've carried a small threat but you might argue they've carried a greater threat than Liverpool. They'll be delighted with 0-0.

You can see with Liverpool, they've won the league and they're probably playing at 80 percent. They're not very good in all honesty at the moment.

There really is a swirling wind here and you have to deal with that. The pitch is also a bit lifeless too and they're watering it now. That might help the game a little bit.

Liverpool's first 45 minutes at home as champions has not been a showcase for what they've done to attain that status.

Jurgen Klopp looks frustrated. Dean Smith will be pretty happy, though. His side have given him plenty.

Liverpool simply can't get anything going. They charge forward but sloppy control allows a Villa man to nip in before he is fouled by Origi.

Ambitious. John McGinn is off balance and 40 yards from goal but has a pop anyway, with predictable results. One of the stewards is gonna have to go get that.

One thing we haven't mentioned is it's extremely windy, which doesn't make things easy.

It just goes to show you cannot turn on form and turn it off, it's a such a great game in that way.

Despite predominately playing through the middle today Divock Origi hasn't had a single touch in the Aston Villa box or in line with the goal so far.

He's also had the joint fewest touches for Liverpool, alongside keeper Alisson.

After a brief absence from the action, the Villa midfielder is back. He doesn't look to be moving too badly but they could do with half-time to properly fix whatever is wrong.

Grealish is down again. This is not looking good for Villa. His right foot is the problem. They are having to patch something up on there repeatedly.

Villa regather and come again for an attack that ends with a low angled effort from El Ghazi that the Reds keeper saves.

Salah has not had a good half. Liverpool attack but his sloppy pass ends it as Villa intercept.

Alexander-Arnold delivers again in to the box, this time from a free-kick, but it is way too close to Pepe Reina, who claims.

Make no mistake, Liverpool are flat here. Villa look the more lively right now. A cross from Trezeguet is just too high for two of his onrushing team-mates to make any contact in the box.

I've just seen a replay of the Trent corner from earlier. Did Konsa get a bit lucky? The ball dropped and appeared to strike a bit of arm as he looked to control it. VAR must have had a look and decided there was no offence. But then who knows what is and isn't handball these days?
