Incredible is the word of the day to use when you're trying to describe Steven Davis' Northern Ireland career. I think there is still a few years left in him too. Don't be expecting him to give up any time soon!

Norway’s 2-1 defeat by Austria last time out ended a nine-match unbeaten run across all competitions (W4 D5). They last lost consecutive matches in November 2017.

    Northern Ireland v Norway

Two exciting young prospects have been promoted from the Northern Ireland Under-21 squad for tonight's match.

Manchester United's Ethan Galbraith and Alfie McCalmont of Leeds United make the step up to join their former U21 boss Ian Baraclough with the senior panel.

Cardiff City winger Gavin Whyte, who scored NI's late equaliser against Romania, is missing from the squad.

Norway had won five consecutive away games against Northern Ireland between 1990 and 2012 before that one.

Northern Ireland have failed to score in four of their last six meetings with Norway.

  11. No-risk Davis manages himself - Gerrardpublished at 19:34 British Summer Time 7 September 2020

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard on Steven Davis: "He's been extremely important, both on and off the pitch. He's so low maintenance, he manages himself, really.

"He hadn't played too much before he joined but once he settled in and got himself up to speed, his performances have been top-class. He has been one of my most consistent performers.

"One of the major reasons I wanted to get him in was that I had experienced playing against him first-hand. I had competed against him and got to know how he carries himself in battle. I knew what he was going to bring.

"I had obviously watched him up at Rangers before and knew that he could handle the crowd. There were a lot of advantages of bringing him in - it was a 'no-brainer' for me to make it happen as soon as I could.

"With some signings you have to take certain risks, but I knew signing Steven had no risk attached at all. You speak to people around him and they tell you he is still in fantastic shape."

  12. Norway scouting reportpublished at 19:29 British Summer Time 7 September 2020

Northern Ireland v Norway (19:45 BST)

At 44th, Norway lie eight places behind Northern Ireland in the Fifa rankings and they suffered a 2-1 defeat at home by Austria in their opening fixture on Friday.

The Norwegians are managed by hugely experienced Swede Lars Lagerback and have one of Europe's most in-form strikers in their ranks in 20-year-old Borussia Dortmund forward Erling Braut Haaland.

Norway lost 2-0 on their last visit to Belfast for a World Cup qualifier in March 2017 but avenged that loss with a 1-0 home success seven months later.

Lagerback's side are preparing to face Serbia in a Euro qualifying play-off semi-final next month, with the winners taking on Scotland or Israel for a place in next summer's finals.

  13. What's after this one?published at 19:26 British Summer Time 7 September 2020

This is Ian Baraclough's last chance to experiment before the big one - Northern Ireland's Euro 2020 play-off away to Bosnia-Herzegovina on 8 October.

The winners of that game will host either the Republic of Ireland or Slovakia in November for a place at Euro 2020.

  14. 'There's a bigger picture'published at 19:24 British Summer Time 7 September 2020

Northern Ireland v Norway (19:45 BST)

NI boss Ian Baraclough has told Sky Sports Jamal Lewis and Jonny Evans had knocks and he decided not to risk either, with next month's Euro 2020 play-off against Bosnia in mind.

"Jamal has got a little niggle. We didn't want to risk it. We can't afford to lose players long term. There's a bigger picture.

"Jonny trained. He had a really good session on Saturday and he picked up a slight thigh strain. It was one we won't risk. He was distraught to not play in either game but we've got to do right by him.

"Everything we've thrown at him [Daniel Ballard] he's taken it and dealt with it. He's a level headed kid. He loves a challenge - I'm sure he'll be fine.

"I know they'll come flying out of the traps with two big boys up front and won't give our defence a minute's peace. If we can match them physically we can play our stuff."

  16. Davis can take record 'out of sight'published at 19:16 British Summer Time 7 September 2020

Northern Ireland v Norway (19:45 BST)

    Media caption,

Baraclough says Davis has "plenty more miles in his legs"

Northern Ireland manager Ian Baraclough on captain Steven Davis' joint record 119th cap: "There are not enough words to be able to describe his achievement.

"It shows a career of dedication. He prepares properly for every training session. People don't see that behind the scenes and that sets you up to have a career like Steven has had.

"He's not finished yet, so don't be finishing him off by any means. Hopefully he can lead us to the Euros and bigger things in World Cups, but that's way down the line.

"I can see Davo stretching it even further and taking it out of sight. It's a fantastic achievement. I can't say enough words about the fella. The way he has led the country and led the troops is an example to everyone."

  18. Elsewhere in Europe...published at 19:08 British Summer Time 7 September 2020

It is relatively quiet in terms of stand-out matches this evening, but there is a blockbuster clash in League A, Group 1 as the Netherlands host Italy in Amsterdam.

Dutch caretaker coach Dwight Lodeweges continues to charge of the team after Ronald Koeman left the job to take over at Barcelona.

There is plenty of Premier League interest with Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk captaining the side and partnering Manchester City new boy Nathan Ake at the back.

Manchester United signing Donny van de Beek and Tottenham's Steven Bergwijn could also start.

Roberto Mancini's Italy drew 1-1 against Bosnia-Herzegovina in their Nations League opener and may go with Chelsea's Jorginho in midfield, with the dangerous Lazio striker Ciro Immobile up top.

  19. Three changes as Evans still missingpublished at 19:03 British Summer Time 7 September 2020

    Northern Ireland v Norway

    Mark Sterling

The mystery surrounding Jonny Evans' absence continues.

This morning, Leicester City tweeted a good luck message to their centre-half for tonight's game, but once again his name has not appeared in the match-day squad.

After pulling out of Friday's draw away to Romania for personal reasons, the former Manchester United man was expected to take his place in Ian Baraclough's back four tonight, but he is missing again.

That means Arsenal's teenage centre-half Daniel Ballard keeps his place in a side that has three changes from Bucharest. Shane Ferguson comes in for Jamal Lewis at left-back with Michael Smith starting at right back and Jordan Thompson coming into midfield.

Josh Magennis is suspended and Jonny's brother Corry drops to the bench as Baraclough looks like he is going with a 4-2-3-1 formation.

  20. What happened last time?published at 18:59 British Summer Time 7 September 2020

    Gavin WhyteImage source, .

Gavin Whyte's late header rescued a 1-1 draw for Northern Ireland in their opening match in Romania.

They had to play over 45 minutes with 10 men after Josh Magennis was sent off for two bookings.

That was Ian Baraclough's first game in charge - and NI's first Nations League point after losing all four last time out.

"The lads only had two weeks pre-season, down to 10 men on 39 minutes and they could have thrown the towel in with so much time left in the game," said Baraclough.

"They could have saved their legs, but that's not the style, the way these guys have been made and brought up.

"There is a fire and hunger and if there is a chance of getting back in the game, they wouldn't give it up. They showed it in abundance in Romania."
