    See you then!

  2. 'The red card threw plans out of the box'published at 22:36 British Summer Time 14 October 2020

    FT: England 0-1 Denmark

    England

More from England manager Gareth Southgate talking to Sky Sports, about why Jack Grealish wasn't brought on: "We had to go with speed in the wide areas and athleticism in the wide areas because with 10 you've got to do such a shift, Mason and Marcus did that really well. They defended well and gave us a threat and Mason nearly scored with the header. Getting Dominic and Jadon on, Harry was winning every header and winning fouls which meant we could get set pieces into the box. The red card threw a lot of plans out of the box unfortunately."

On Reece James: "That's a lesson he's got to learn. He had an incredible debut, he's impressed me all week. Until that moment he'd showed great maturity. It's ended up something that shouldn't have happened but for the overall week he's made a positive impression."

Do England have a discipline problem? "It's an obvious question we're going to be asked. We've put ourselves in unnecessary positions off the pitch. The reds for Kyle Walker and Harry Maguire here, one yellow justified, one not so sure. We've got to learn from it because if you go down to 10, historically that means we're out, especially if you're doing it for an hour."

  3. 'I couldn't be prouder of the boys'published at 22:34 British Summer Time 14 October 2020

    FT: England 0-1 Denmark

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate talking to Sky Sports: "I was very proud of the performance. I thought we were excellent with 11 men and causing them all sorts of problems down our right-hand side. The sending off alters everything and the penalty. It's a foul on Kyle Walker and I don't see the foul at all. The less said the better.

"We showed resilience and showed a great example of how to play with 10 pragmatically, and when to press. Their keeper made an amazing save to keep it at 1-0. I couldn't be prouder of the boys in the last 10 days, they are learning and improving. We've had any number of changes to our preparation and showed resilience."

On Harry Maguire: "The first yellow was a challenge he didn't need to make and it put him on edge. The second one is an interception and it just takes him through the player.

He's a great player and massive part of what we do. He's got a lot sticks thrown his way, he's got our full support. He just needs the reassurance that we have total belief in him. He's had to deal with all sorts, and from some people who should know better. When you're a bit older you can rationalise it, and move forward from it. He's experiencing it from the first time really, he's had setbacks but his profile has changed in the last couple of years because of the club he plays for and the success he's had with us. He's got to keep going and the tide will turn."

While we wait for Gareth Southgate, here's what's happened elsewhere tonight...

The Netherlands finally scored under new manager Frank de Boer as they held Italy to a 1-1 draw in Bergamo.

Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek slammed in a loose ball to end a drought of 323 minutes under the former Crystal Palace boss.

Robert Lewandowski scored twice as Poland beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 3-0 and Romelu Lukaku netted both goals as Belgium recorded a 2-1 win away at Iceland.

In a repeat of the World Cup final, Kylian Mbappe scored the winning goal for France in a 2-1 victory over Croatia.

Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva opened the scoring and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota netted in each half for hosts Portugal in Lisbon, as they comfortbly beat Sweden3-0 without Cristiano Ronaldo, who has tested positive for coronavirus.

David: Southgate changing/chopping way too much. Huge discipline problems, is he too soft? He needs to find formation, team and dna to play Every game. No excuse. Rafael van der Vaart is right - Maguire terrible, should not be In squad now. 10 players with issues, too Many GS.

  7. 'Extremely proud of how we responded'published at 22:21 British Summer Time 14 October 2020

    FT: England 0-1 Denmark

    England

More from England captain Harry Kane on BBC Radio 5 Live: "Disappointed to lose the match but extremely proud of how we responded to going down to 10 men.

"The 10 men changes the game and they get a soft penalty. We had a few chances that on another day would have gone in. But I was proud of the attitude."

On Reece James' sending off: "I think it's one of those games, when as professional athletes, you lay you heart on the line and a few things don't go your way way, it's part of the learning curve. I'm sure Reece will learn from it. When you're going at 120% and things don't quite happen it's frustrating.

"We had two great games, good quality on the ball. Today was a totally different game and an experience you might get in tournament football and have to try and find a way to make chances and we did that today. We could have been there for another 90 minutes and the ball just wasn't going to go in the goal."

  9. 'It is great preparation for the Euros'published at 22:18 British Summer Time 14 October 2020

    FT: England 0-1 Denmark

    England

England captain Harry Kane talking to Sky Sports: "It was a tough game. I'm proud of the boys, they gave it everything. We had control of the game till the red card, we conceded the penalty straight after, whether it was or wasn't. we dug deep and they didn't create many chances and we created some and on another day they may have gone in.

"We were in control, getting good crosses into the box and I guess it was just a matter of time until we broke them down and scored. In big games mistakes can cost you and that's what happened today. It's great preparation going into the Euros next year, it's a good experience for going forward.

"I don't think tempers freated, some decisions didn't go our way today. we put it all out there, but things just didn't quite work for us today. For our point of view it's all about preparing, it was a great win against Wales and Belgium and it would have been nice to finish it off here but it just wasn't meant to be."

On Harry Maguire: "It's all part of the learning curve, and the experience of international football. Obviously he'll be disappointed, but he'll bounce back. He's had a great three or four years. Football is all about working hard and I'm sure that's what he'll do."

On discipline: "I don't think we've got issues. It was a night that we put everything on the line. The one at the end was just laying your heart on the pitch, when things don't quite go your way. I can't fault the boys in that way. It's just about being professional and being role models for everyone."

  10. 'Maguire's been a great servant for England'published at 22:15 British Summer Time 14 October 2020

    FT: England 0-1 Denmark

    England

England midfielder Declan Rice talking to Sky Sports: "It's tough to take, a defeat is not the direction that we wanted to head in tonight, we wanted three wins. Our second half performance, we dug in and showed strength and character.

"I think there was a frustration at the end, because we lost, it's not the way we want to go."

Do England have discipline problems? "The limelight is always on you when you play for England, you always need to be on it, here and away from here, because you are always representing England. Our lads are great, we all love each other and there's real focus for us."

Do you need to rally around Harry Maguire? "He has been fantastic in the last 10 days. I love to have him playing behind me, because he plays little balls into me and is always talking. He's a great player and he's been a great servant for England."

    • Denmark have lost just two of their last 40 international matches, keeping clean sheets in nine of their last 11 games.
    • Christian Eriksen has been directly involved in 32 goals in his last 35 appearances for his national side (24 goals, 8 assists).
    • Harry Maguire’s red card after 31 minutes was the second earliest by an England player in an international, after Rob Green vs Ukraine in October 2009 (14 minutes).
    • This was Marcus Rashford’s 40th England cap, becoming only the third player to reach that tally before the age of 23, after Michael Owen in 2002 and Wayne Rooney in 2007.
  12. 'It's great to keep the shirt'published at 22:11 British Summer Time 14 October 2020

    FT: England 0-1 Denmark

    England

England keeper Jordan Pickford BBC Radio 5 Live: "I know there's questions and scrutiny but it's good because I want to get better and better.

"To have the backing from the manager - we all know how good Popey (Nick Pope) was last year and Hendo (Dean Henderson) had a great season for Sheffield United, so it's great to keep the shirt."

  13. 'Odd that Grealish didn't get on'published at 22:08 British Summer Time 14 October 2020

    FT: England 0-1 Denmark

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

I thought it was strange putting Dominic Calvert-Lewin out on the left-hand side. That's not where he plays for Everton, he is a central striker. The thought process there was 'we'll go a little bit more direct' because Calvert-Lewin is extremely strong in the air. I didn't understand that thought process, I can understand why people would be asking for Jack Grealish there. I was surprised that Grealish didn't get on, that was an odd one.

  14. 'The red card and penalty swung the game'published at 22:06 British Summer Time 14 October 2020

    FT: England 0-1 Denmark

    England

England midfielder Declan Rice talking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "Until the sending off happened I thought we were playing really well and using the ball really well. Reece James and Mason Mount were creating some great chances for us but we just couldn't put the ball in the back of the net.

"We knew if we carried on playing like that then a goal was coming, but then the red card and automatically the game then swings into their favour. From that point on it was just about getting to half-time but the penalty happened. The task was then tougher.

"Gareth [Southgate] said to be strong, show our character, be resilient and work hard for each other at half-time. In the second half we did that, I expected more from them, putting more players forward but we defended well. Kasper Schmeichel pulled off two great saves. Obviously it's a negative to lose but I think you can look positively on the way we performed in the second half.

"Steve Holland said before the game that top teams go and beat the best teams and come back the next game, a couple of days later. It was all set up for that, we started well and created some great chances but it swung in their favour.

"Reece James looked like he'd been out here for 30-40 caps tonight. I've been with him since under-8s and I know he's capable of that. he's a fantastic young player and gives us another option going forward and I don't think that sending off should affect how positively we look at his performance."

Ant S: Might sound ridiculous but what about Poch for the job? He's done great things bringing English youth through the ranks at 2 clubs and has always played attractive football...

Kyle: England were poor tonight but we are still in a positive place we beat Belgium and showed our quality. Yes we were poor tonight but we still put in a battling performance. We had 3 or 4 good chances battled hard and could have got a result.

  16. 'England fans want England to play fantasy football'published at 21:59 British Summer Time 14 October 2020

    FT: England 0-1 Denmark

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Can't we be happy when we beat a big nation? What is wrong with people?

What was the story of the story against Belgium? What was the story of the game this evening? That's what you have to do. You have to strip it back.

I think there are people in this country who look at the England team and want fantasy football, they want England to play big expansive open football. They think we have a Kevin de Bruyne, where is he? Who has that range of passing? We don't have those players so Gareth Southgate is making difficult calls but it was a formation that was good enough against Belgium but it didn't work tonight because of a sending off and a soft penalty.

The last four performances have been absolutely dreadful and had Belgium turned up they'd have given us a right kicking. Based on that we needed it, but as always we're just not bad enough to do anything about it. If the FA can put St George's park together and sort out talent coming through why can't they spend a bit of money on some tacticians? That's what Alex Ferguson used to do.

    FT: England 0-1 Denmark

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

England were the better team until the red card. We can't defend Harry Maguire because it was brainless, after the first yellow card. It was an easy decision for the referee. But the penalty was so, so soft and England were then up against it.
