The free-kick is cleared comfortably by England and Thomas Delaney's flick-on is then picked up by Jordan Pickford.

He rolls it out to Conor Coady but England's back three are put under immediate pressure.

Yussuf Poulsen then slides a dangerous ball in from the right but Danish striker Kasper Dolberg can't quite poke it in.

Pragmatism over flair. A theme which has so often run through English team sport. Reminds me of the selectors opting for Rob Andrew over Stuart Barnes in Rugby Union. International tournament football is all about results and Southgate who has been an excellent England manager is clearly minimising risk. However there will be so many football fans crying out for Grealish who so clearly has the ability to illuminate the team's performance.

Harry Maguire lunges in on Yussuf Poulsen and you could hear the squeal from the Danish player.

The referee lets play go on before booking Maguire, who is a little lucky it's not a different colour...

That's a terrific ball in from Reece James - he properly whipped it in but there were no takers for England.

Reece James makes a smart overlapping run on the right and curls in a teasing cross. Harry Kane won't get there and it just swings away from Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

Skipper Kane gives the Chelsea defender a thumbs up.

England can come into this game with plenty of confidence.

Gareth Southgate has been talking about the three haves: you've got to have consistency, constant improvement and constant evolution.

England will want a result tonight and a performance.

Won't criticise Southgate tonight, unless he fails to bring Saka on for his competitive debut and thus allows him to play for Nigeria, ala Zaha for Ivory Coast. That would be unforgivable.

Marcus Rashford puts a bit of pressure on a loose pass and it's honked out for a throw-in in the England half.

It comes over to Ainsley Maitland-Niles on the left side and he goes on a decent run but it comes to nothing. Harry Kane's shot then loops comfortably into Kasper Schmeichel's arms.

I really don't get people criticising Southgate's team selection. It's been a very compromised start of the season at club level and I think he is correct in being sympathetic to that with regards to who gets game time. This isn't even a proper tournament.

Getting so frustrated with all these so called England fans knocking every decision that Southgate makes, knocking the players that are coming in, bemoaning the players that aren't in...Get.A.Grip. Southgate is playing the long game and is being extremely clever. By giving game time to all these players he is not only testing the players out there, he is giving them the playing minutes for England-which when we get to tournament football will be invaluable. And the reason Grealish isn't starting is why no big clubs have came in to sign him...lazy and selfish - something which despite his undoubted talent makes him less of a team player.

We've moaned for years about England being a soft touch at tournaments and getting the tactics wrong. Gareth Southgate is looking at the players he has and saying 'we're maybe not capable of that, we don't have a Kevin de Bruyne in the middle of the park'.

I don't think we should put the boot into Gareth for a formation - the back three - that worked well in Russia. He's damned if he does, and damned if he doesn't.

  14. 'Good to be back at Wembley'published at 19:38 British Summer Time 14 October 2020

    England v Denmark (19:45 BST)

Inter Milan midfielder Christian Eriksen earns his 100th cap for Denmark tonight at Wembley, where he played for a season with former club Tottenham while Spurs' new stadium was being built.

Eriksen, 28, played more than 300 games in seven seasons with Spurs, before moving to Serie A last January.

"It's good to be back at Wembley and back in London," he said. "To reach 100 is impressive, in a weird way, because it's something you only think about when you retire.

"You want to play the next game, and the next one. When I retire, I'll look back - but at the moment it's just about the next one.

"You play for Denmark because you are talented and because you work for it."

There is a lot of competition for places, especially in those forward areas. There's Mason Mount, Marcus Rashford, Jack Grealish, Mason Greenwood, Jadon Sancho - there's a lot of competition. That's a good thing.

I can understand the frustration from supporters around the country that want to see Grealish playing because he's a superb talent but so is Mount. Gareth has gone with Mount for a reason.

It's ok beating a top side but England have to go again tonight. Gareth must have said the same thing. They've got to back it up against a very good Denmark side. But there is nothing wrong with the team - is that not the manager's job to look at the players available and pick the best team at his disposal?

Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

I get the excitement about Jack Grealish. But is Mason Mount not underrated though? Why does Gareth Southgate pick him ahead of Grealish?

In my opinion, because he trusts him more. Gareth sees him, he's seen the training camp and see how everyone is training. Does Jack Grealish, that isn't me saying this I'm just putting the question out there, do enough defensively? Does he put in the shift that Mason Mount puts in? I don't know. He's picking Mason Mount for a reason.

  18. 'Kane has not had an injury'published at 19:32 British Summer Time 14 October 2020

    England v Denmark (19:45 BST)

England "do not risk players" and captain Harry Kane "has not had an injury", says manager Gareth Southgate.

Tottenham striker Kane appeared as a substitute in Sunday's win over Belgium and is back in the starting XI today.

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho asked international managers to protect his players after a hefty fixture schedule and was reportedly , externalopposed to Kane starting against Denmark.

Tottenham were the first English side to return to action this season because of their involvement in the Europa League qualifiers and before Sunday, Kane had featured in 10 games in the past 29 days for club and country.

Kane, was sent for a scan but Southgate said the player has been "fully fit since the end of last week".

  19. 'Fans should be full of optimism'published at 19:30 British Summer Time 14 October 2020

    England v Denmark (19:45 BST)

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

England fans should be going into this game full of optimism and confidence because the last game they beat the number one ranked side in the world.

I don't have a problem with how Gareth Southgate sets his team out. England don't have that creativity in the middle of the park - they don't have a Paul Gascoigne or a Paul Scholes - so Gareth is saying that to play winning football, at this moment in time, I'm going to make us difficult to beat.

Belgium dominated in the first half, but they changed things at half-time, and stopped the supply line into Romelu Lukaku and it's great for England to get the victory against a top nation. Tonight they have to back that up against a really difficult, awkward team. They are extremely talented.

  20. 'So much more to come'published at 19:28 British Summer Time 14 October 2020

    England v Denmark (19:45 BST)

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane was critical of Marcus Rashford's first-half display , externalat Wembley but Gareth Southgate says it's easy to forget the striker is still 23.

"I think sometimes he doesn't realise how good he can be," Southgate told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"In the second half at the weekend you saw a player with belief, ambition, working for the team, goal threat, pace and guile and skill that frightens the opposition.

"He has got to continue to have that belief in himself. We've got tremendous faith in him. There is so much more to come."
