  1. 'Tonight is about more guile, threat and creating chances'published at 19:26 British Summer Time 14 October 2020

    England v Denmark (19:45 BST)

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate talking to Sky Sports: "We've talked about backing up Sunday's win since practically straight after the game. The big sides back up results with consistency and that's the challenge for us tonight.

"On Sunday, our possession was well controlled, our work without the ball was well controlled and when we didn't have the ball we almost able to dictate the game without the ball and in big games I think that's important. Tonight is about adding a bit more guile, threat and creating more chances on goal.

"We need to make more of the positions we take up, get our wing backs higher up and get more threat from them. We need to make more runs in behind and more interchanges of position. We're going to have a bit more clever tonight, in our movements, against a 4-3-3."

Used to find England games so dull I'd end up either switching off or hoping the opposition would win by the end. Under Southgates early reign I enjoyed watching us for the first time in years. Didn't care if we lost as we entertained. Why the change to such conservative teams/tactics recently? Pretty sure that's 3 right backs in the team again?! #Dull

    Mike Judges

Exciting time to be an England fan! One of the best right backs in the world, one of the best young players in the world. A captain who won premier league champions league and player of the season, and we also have the premier leagues top scorer so far! ..... oh wait they're on the bench.

  3. A year on from racist abusepublished at 19:21 British Summer Time 14 October 2020

    England v Denmark (19:45 BST)

    Alex Howell
    BBC Sport reporter

It's a year to the day since the England team were victims of horrendous racist abuse in Bulgaria during a European Championship qualifying match in October 2019.

During a comfortable 6-0 victory the team were subjected to monkey chants and Nazi salutes from home supporters. Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings, making his debut on the night, was the first of the players to report abuse to the match officials. Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling was also targeted early on in the match.

Former England striker and pundit Ian Wright called it a "seminal moment" and the world's football media reacted with widespread praise for England and condemnation of the abuse.

One year on, Gareth Southgate and England coach Chris Powell spoke exclusively to BBC Sport about their memories of that night and the changes that have since been made.

    England v Denmark (19:45 BST)

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Wembley

Some might call it conservative - defensive even - to go with two holding midfield players and three at the back against Denmark at home.

It is a selection designed to irritate Jack Grealish's many supporters after his outstanding performance against Wales but manager Gareth Southgate clearly has faith in this system and those of us who thought England's approach was too cautious in the first half against Belgium received our answer with the final result.

It does seem a little over-cautious against Denmark, though.

Sean Turner: Emma, don't know if you mist any of the action but England continue to rain in the group. The only clouds are around selection with some front by a few fans who would be managers, all blowing wind IMO. Welcome back.

NO WEATHER CHAT SEAN! (See 6.37 entry) But nicely done.

  7. Missing faces for Englandpublished at 19:15 British Summer Time 14 October 2020

    England v Denmark (19:45 BST)

It's worth noting (for Gareth Southgate's sake!), there are a few missing from selection tonight.

Eric Dier, who played in Sunday's win over Belgium, misses out because of a hamstring injury.

Tottenham teammate Harry Winks, Everton defender Michael Keane, Leicester winger Harvey Barnes and Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham have also been left out, while Ben Chilwell and Kieran Trippier withdrew on Tuesday.

A pre-existing injury led to the withdrawal of Chelsea's Chilwell, while Atletico Madrid's Trippier left the camp to deal with an FA hearing for alleged betting breaches.

The FA said Trippier had departed the squad "for personal reasons".

As an Evertonian I am delighted to see Europe's highest scoring striker on the bench and the Premier league leaders top centre half not even named in the squad.. There's a far more important game coming up this weekend.

Conor Coady talking to Sky Sports: "I've found it amazing so far. I've really enjoyed it, the boys have been fantastic with me.

"It's tough like the Premier League. I've been trying to impress but it's about helping England win games.

"I remember on my first call-up people were telling me about not changing. It's not about trying to impose myself, it's about trying to help England and that's first and foremost.

"No matter what the formation the gaffer plays, we're here to give 110% for England. I play three at the back for Wolves and it's a fantastic formation to play."

How are we supposed to get excited playing 5 at the back with 2 holding mids? I'd rather England lost playing with flair and ambition than grinding a result by parking the bus.

    Jamie Howarth

With respect I don't think Denmark pose the same sort of attacking threat as Belgium so this very defensive line up baffles me. Where is the creativity in this team?

  11. New Zealand cancel England friendlypublished at 19:07 British Summer Time 14 October 2020

New Zealand will not play England at Wembley in an international friendly next month, because of travel and player availability complications.

England were due to host the All Whites on 12 November but New Zealand Football say the game could "potentially jeopardise" their players' careers.

"A number of the team would be subject to quarantine or restrictions on their return home," said NZF.

"This would heavily disrupt their domestic seasons."

New Zealand have not played an international match since their friendly defeat by Lithuania last November.

  12. Expensive flop to leader & championpublished at 19:04 British Summer Time 14 October 2020

    England v Denmark (19:45 BST)

    Steve Sutcliffe
    BBC Sport reporter

Underrated and undervalued. Not any more.

The Football Writers' Footballer of the Year and a contender for the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year, Jordan Henderson has also been a European and Premier League champion over the past two seasons.

Not bad for a player once considered an expensive flop, told he couldn't run properly and someone the Reds wanted to use as a makeweight in a deal to sign Clint Dempsey from Fulham in 2012.

But, as he could earn his 57th England cap against Denmark off the bench tonight, we look at how he became the heartbeat for club and country and evolved into the leader we see today.

So do we get some #Southgateout again before kick off today? Saint Grealish isn't playing, so outrage inbound. Surely beating the world's best should buy Southgate the grace of one team selection? We can only hope for such levels of support.

  17. Nketiah breaks England U21s recordpublished at 18:56 British Summer Time 14 October 2020

    England U21 2-1 Turkey U21

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah became England Under-21s' leading goalscorer as they beat Turkey at Molineux last night to book their place at next year's European Championship.

Nketiah missed an 84th-minute penalty but coolly clipped in a record 14th goal at this level four minutes later.

England went ahead through Huseyin Turkmen's own goal, deflecting Ryan Sessegnon's cross into his net.

Aaron Ramsdale kept out Halil Dervisoglu's penalty, but the Turkey striker netted a consolation late on.

Unbeaten England's qualifying campaign has been exceptional, as they have won seven of their eight games, with their only blemish coming in a surprise 3-3 draw at minnows Andorra last time out.

Aidy Boothroyd's side finish top of Group Three with two games to spare and reach their eighth consecutive European Championship.

  20. 'Grealish very much in the frame'published at 18:50 British Summer Time 14 October 2020

    England v Denmark (19:45 BST)

Over a year has passed since England's last defeat - 2-1 against Czech Republic - and since then Gareth Southgate's side have scored 23 goals and conceded just once.

But Southgate says is is "very rare we have a full squad to pick from" and will have to do without "two or three key players" again this evening.

Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish - who has two caps but was an unused substitute in the win over Belgium and only makes the bench tonight - has been carrying "a knock", according to Southgate.

"I think he is enjoying the experience and he's enjoying seeing how we want to play and that's slightly different to his club," the manager added.

"Obviously every player has to adjust to that, so he is very much in the frame. He's continuing to prove his position within the squad that's for sure."
