Chris Singleton: This England team is so one-paced and lacking initiative. All I can assume is that with the possible exceptions of Kane and Grealish, Southgate has been asked to fill the team with players who aren’t important to their clubs.

Kane is the elephant in the room I am afraid. So slow, so stationary, so one dimensional.

Someone is deploying either an angle grinder or a remote-controlled car in the background here at BBC Sport HQ so it's a bit hard to concentrate but Harry Maguire is now on the right of the back three. Phil Foden slams a shot into the back of an Icelander.

Speaking of creativity, Harry Winks is warming up.

England move the ball smartly inside the area from a corner and Bukayo Saka whacks in a shot which is straight at the keeper.

  5. 'Mount adds creative element'published at 21:07 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2020

Yes England would play two in central midfield but one would sit deeper and the other one would have the freedom, as opposed to two side by side, sat in front of the back three.

And I know that happens anyway with Rice and Henderson but you just feel that someone like Mason Mount in that role, it does add more of a creative element and he will go forward and will naturally take up positions that hurt the opposition.

A bit of a nudge, if not quite a wake-up call for England. Phil Foden responds by finding Harry Kane who swivels and shoots but his shot is charged down.

  7. CLOSE!published at 60 mins

    England 2-0 Iceland

Chance! Ah, Iceland should score. Captain Kári Árnason escapes the England defence at a corner and heads wide at the near post. A fine chance.

    Belgium 2-1 Denmark

    Belgium

Belgium are back in front after a lovely worked moved finished off by Romelu Lukaku.

Youri Tielemans finds Kevin de Bruyne with a quick free-kick and the Manchester City midfielder then picks out Lukaku, whose shot takes a slight deflection on its way into the net.

  9. Iceland's misery continuespublished at 21:03 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2020

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Wembley

Iceland have barely had any encouragement tonight and the needless second yellow card for Birkir Sævarsson only makes matters worse.

This is a real chance for a very dominant England to ram home their vast superiority. And a chance for those creative forces such as Jack Grealish and Phil Foden to add the flourishes.

Not every foul has to be a booking. It was beyond soft.

Kevin Taylor: No way that was a second yellow, discretion for goodness sake.

Ourhandsaretied: That second yellow was really REALLY harsh.

That was daft because there was a covering defender, so he didn't need to tug Saka back.

Does that open up even more space for England? You'd think so.

  14. RED CARD - Birkir Már Saevarssonpublished at 54 mins

    Harsh?

Do we think a goal for Jack Grealish tonight makes a big difference for him? He almost needs a goal.

I'd like to see Jadon Sancho coming on. He had a decent game against Republic of Ireland and I think he needs another game in the team, needs to show his worth and remind Gareth Southgate that he's the player he should pick.

No matter the final score, you won't convince me this formation will get the best out of this England side. You'd expect a Premier league side to beat a League 2 team by a few

Dear Santa, Please let Mr Southgate discover an attacking mentality under his tree this Christmas, he'll need something to play properly with next summer. Thanks.
