That's exactly why Grealish is in the team, he loves driving into the corner of that 18-yard box and if any player is in advance of him, facing him up, he's almost a bounce board, finding another angle or making another run. It's exactly why he's in the team.

Superb from Jack Grealish - whatever happens in the next year or so surely he's cemented a place?

He picks it up from deep on the left, there's not much on but he glides inside, away from a defender and plays in Mason Mount. He flips it on to Bukayo Saka, who puts it across goal - but the flag was up.

    Superb from Grealish though.

  4. 'Managers could be on edge'published at 19:53 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2020

    England 0-0 Iceland

    Matthew Upson
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Some Premier League managers could be on edge, you have to say, looking from afar thinking 'fingers crossed please don't walk into training with any problems.' It's essential that the players play but there will be a few managers sitting on the edge of their seats.

    England 0-0 Iceland

Jack Grealish dances in from the left under heavy pressure and finds Mason Mount inside the area, he turns and shoots but it's deflected away. Jordan Pickford then comes to punch a cross clear.

  6. Belgium take early leadpublished at 19:51 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2020

    Belgium 1-0 Denmark

    Belgium

It has taken all of three minutes for Belgium to take the lead against Denmark and it is Youri Tielemans - who opened the scoring against England last-time out - with the goal.

Belgium have now scored in the first 16 minutes in each of their last seven Nations League games. The Belgians love an early goal.

The home side need just a point to progress to the finals.

Iceland have a flat back five which could easily become a back nine. England are going to see a lot of the ball. Phil Foden is on the right of the front three early on with Jack Grealish playing from the left.

Paul Christie: I will say it again, it is really painful seeing Declan Rice playing in midfield for England. I cannot think of anything he's actually good at? If he's the answer what the heck is the question.

Reindeerhotdog: Grealish overlooked for the important games bar one now starts in what is in effect a completely unimportant, meaningless friendly. Imagine if he/Kane/Foden gets injured tonight... And Pope/Henderson still can't get a game! Southgate = clueless. Time to move on.

James Garland: Another conservative team from Southgate. Last game of the tournament nothing on the line go take some risks. He can't be playing so defensive against weaker teams.

It's a cracking anthem from Iceland.

Cat Whisperer: Mount and Dier again. Why not try something new - Another defensive team. Are we suddenly short of attackers?

Why are some players starting 3 games in a row? Why so we have to stick to this cautious system at home to Iceland, there is no need for it

    Rob, Swindon

What went wrong with England? 3-4-3 with 2 holding midfielders hasn't worked, especially with a, at times, leaky defence. I'd still go with Pickford, but Pope isn't far behind him.

Scotland and Wales' Nations League promotion hopes go to the final day but England cannot progress.

Winning your group in the top division sends you to the finals next October - France and Spain have already qualified for that mini-tournament - while finishing top of a group in a lower league secures promotion.

So what do the home nations need in the final round of games - and what has already been decided?

    Have a read here.

Andy K: I think Southgate has got the team sheet the wrong way round. All those subs should be playing and getting Int'l experience in this meaningless game!

Darren W: Surely with the players England got we should just attack. Otherwise will just go out of tournament losing 1-0.

Jack Tanner: Has it all gone wrong for England? Or are we reading too much into semi competitive games in an overstretched schedule which have been used as testing boards before the important stuff next year?

  17. 'Options for Southgate'published at 19:25 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2020

    England v Iceland (19:45 GMT)

    Matthew Upson
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I remember the success England had in Russia with one sitter in front of the back three and I think that's something to look at and explore.

I'm not saying that Gareth Southgate is going to play with Mason Mount ridiculously higher up the pitch - I think he probably will stay with Declan Rice for the majority of the game in front of the back three - but we coped really well in that tournament with Jordan Henderson sitting in front of the back three for the majority of the games and we looked pretty secure and solid.

So, to try and solve that conundrum of getting one extra attacker on the pitch, that's an option for Gareth Southgate.

Mount - is he really all that? Surely someone else deserves a go. And Dier and Walker - we’ll win no tournaments with them at the back. Who lost his man in the semi final again?

    James, London

So tired of conservative Southgate sides. Grealish should be in midfield and Kane should be flanked either side by pace and guile. He should pick players that fit the system and that system is 4-3-3

    James, Kent

Why have England suddenly adopted squad numbers. When every other nation was selling out to squad numbers, I was so proud England kept the traditional 1-11. The game's gone!
